BMW/Castrol 5W30 or Mobil1 10W40

Any thoughts on what oil to use at my break in oil change? The Warranty booklet (page 6) says that BMW Castrol 5W30 and Mobil1 10W40 are strongly recommended oils for the 1 series. They do not list any other oils or weights.

Of course if you read the owner's manual (page 117) it only recommends using BMW 5W30. It also says to use 5W30 or 5W40 weight as they work in all temps.

Since I live in Cali with no chance of seeing temps near freezing, I am thinking the Mobil1 10W40 is the oil to go with. But this is my first turbo engine and I not not sure who weight of oil works well in them. Any thoughts on what oil would be best out of the two "approved" oils given where I live and that the car will see some autoxing and maybe a track school or two?

German Castrol should be fine, same with Mobil 1. I personally used GC and M1 0W40 on my Audi as they are formulated for the German manufacturers and have gotten very excellent oil analysis reviews.

You can get the dealer oil change kit delivered to your door for $53.10 (5W-30 Castrol) The same oil & filter the dealer uses.
I may use Castrol 0W-30 and forgo the dealer done oil changes. (GC)

I used German Castrol 0w-30 post break-in. Be careful to read the back of the label for the 'Made in Germany' mark.

If I use Mobil I have to use 10W40, or it can be 5W30?

According to the warranty booklet they only recommend BMW 5W30 and Mobil1 10W40. I am not sure why the weight for Mobil1 is 10W40 and not 5W30.

Viscosity measurement probably varies a little beween producers and oil types. People report that the German Castrol 0-30 actually behaves more like a 5-40.

IIRC, Mobil 1 5w30 is a different formulation which does not meet BMW's criteria, but the 10w 40 does.
