Apple Stock was $0.22 a share in 2000. Now $222.00
MRSP M5 2000 was $70,000.
If you bought Apple stock instead, it would be worth $70,636,182.

Investing in a Car is Just Stupid.

Of course I did not buy any apple stock, instead I bought a '03 RS6 for 80 Grand.

LOL

Sad that the car was never enjoyed. Now all plastic and rubber parts are 20 years old. It won't drive like new despite the miles.

I know everyone holds the E39 on a pedestal and I desperately wanted one back in 2003. But today the F90 is a better M5 in every way. A RWD 400hp 6 speed was awesome in 2003, but now that seems so pedestrian. Maybe I'm jaded since I had RWD V8 manuals for 20 years before the F90.

The seals and hoses on that car sitting in a tomb for all these years can't be great.

Save yourself 200k and buy this one: https://www.europeancollectibles.com...84/2000-bmw-m5

2000 BMW M5 with 18,802 miles for $76,500. I might have to check it out since it is only 1 hour drive time from my house in SOCAL.

Except the f90 has no character...none.

I didn't love the e39 that I had in period, but there is something to be said for it now as cars have gotten so clinical.

Non-issue. The person who spends $280k on a 20 year old M5 can afford to replace deals and hoses.

Ha, clinical is a word I used to describe the F90 when I got it. Since it was my first German car I just attributed that to it being German.

My 04 CTS-V had a lot of what I think you mean by character. I didn't like that. The car was quirky and nervous and fun at times. When I got my 09 CTS-V it was faster and handled better and was so much easier to drive at the limits. But for some I could see it being more boring. My F90 is of course faster still but it feels more fun to drive than the 09 V. I would argue that in the luxury performance sedan segment the F90 is the perfect car. If you want more quirks, less isolation, etc., that is not this car or this segment. It was maybe back in 2003 but cars have gotten so much "better". To me this segment means I get track level performance but I don't have to give up much luxury sedan behavior and every day, all-weather drivability. And I think the base vs comp was a good offering because it let you select which aspect you wanted to emphasize, and the M550 was great if you wanted the speed but didn't want to sacrifice ride quality or get the hassle that goes with a performance car (summer/winter tires, more maintenance, insurance costs, etc.)

The E39 M5 exists better in my memory. I remember when it first came out in 1998, I was a sophomore in college. I couldn't afford an M5, let alone a BMW. I could only see it up close in person and sit inside one at the auto show. But like others have said, cars and technology progress forward. Live for the present and the future.

Absolutely agreed from an operational perspective, but the person buying this car (certainly not me) doesn’t care about that for a second.

Also agree here — this was too good a car in its heyday to be an (extreme) garage queen. Plastics and rubbers are certainly deteriorated. But again, I think the right buyer for this doesn’t care about that.

The F90 is undoubtedly a better car in almost every way that I can think. I can’t think of a better DD (for me), even if I wanted to throw another $50k at figuring out what that is). But this is still one sweet car, even if it’s one you continue to keep tucked away like this original owner did.

Best DD I’ve ever owned, and mine’s not going anywhere, even though I may get into another DD in the next year.

I don’t mean to sound snobbish, arrogant, or like I’m gate keeping this example. But the person who thinks like that isn’t the buyer for this car. As I mentioned above, I don’t mean to sound like an ass — I am not that buyer either. But boy oh boy can I appreciate this thing from afar.

I’m not dropping $280K on this. I’ve got a handful of cars, but certainly not a dozen or more like more than a few members here. Maybe if I did, I’d be marginally closer to being a buyer of this example. But again, it’s not me. I’m an enthusiast for sure, but not quite a collector.

You’re 100% right without a doubt. I’m not going to make the same points as I made above at the risk of sounding condescending.

I appreciate the all original paint work and seemingly almost immaculate overall condition, and of course another $200k another toy!

Please report back if you do check this example out!

In 1998, this was prime. An F90 would destroy this car in almost every regard except (at least until we see the G90 and then some generations up close and personal). There’s no way you’ll pry the F90 from my hands, but I still think this would be a sweet toy to have.

I’m all for living in the present — I might even acquire a G90/G99 in a year or so! Blaspheming to most here, I know.
