My buddy bought the demo model and it came lowered with the BMW Performance Suspension.

I believe it's just the springs. The cost was approximately a 1K upgrade. I believe it lowers the car about 1.5 inches.

When driving over speed bumps or just down a regular road I was surprised. It's very hard to tell any difference between the M-Sport Package springs vs these ones. In the corners however, it's nice and stiff, handles great, with less body roll.

I am definitely going to get them myself!

I'm very surprised it's just the springs.

Replacing the springs without also getting shocks to match is a recipe for premature shock absorber failure.

If it reduces the body roll, then count me in...

I have sold a few E46 and E90 suspensions, and here is what they come with:

Struts, sway bars, bushings, nuts, bolts, and control arms. They do not come with springs, and in order to order a BMW Performance suspension, I (or any BMW dealership that knows what they're doing) need the last 7 digits of your VIN number to see what springs you need.

As for the 1 Series BMW Performance Suspension, I can confirm that it definitely comes with dampers and swaybars.

As for the ride, we haven't tested one out since they haven't been released from BMW AG yet.

As far as performance goes, I would set a conservative insight in your head, because BMW is always going to be conservative with their performance. For example, they claim "3hp" from the BMW E46 Perf. Intake, but a member on E46fanatics did a dyno and came up with around 11hp.

The suspension lowers the car about .5 to .75 inches on ride height.

Thanks for the info, Dan. But I'm confused how the ride height can be lower without changing the springs. Different spring pads? BTW, .5" -.75" is perfect lowering for a BMW, IMO (I know, most people want them lower, just not me).

So springs are extra $?

based on what was posted before about how we can control body roll with either springs or sways, i like this option better.
seems to be a more cohesive upgrade than just sways.

any ETA as to when we can expect them to be available?

That is my opinion too. I like the look of about the maximum of 1 inch drop, especially here in Atlanta where the roads are horrible.

You would need to get the springs unless you feel like rolling on stock springs with a performance setup.

To answer another question: The springs are extra, and we would need your VIN to get them.

Unless you intend to compete Nationally I say build the car the way you want it for daily street use, then run whatever autocross class that puts you in. Just my opinion though.

Depends on the drop, I would have to think. If the drop is within the specified drop due to increased vehicle weight, it should be OK.

We can measure that too, approximately: load up the car with 4 people and measure the height difference - that should be your absolute max drop if you still want the stocks shocks to cope.

Am I missing something here?

That's true to some extent, I suppose. I was always told to replace shocks along with the springs.

You can go with the max permissible drop theory, but I contend that if you drive your car with 4 people in it all the time, your shocks are going to wear out sooner than if you don't.

I'd like to give you all the answers you're looking for. Unfortunately I do not have them at this time. I am working with my general manager, sales manager, and parts department manager to try and lease a 135i parts car. If this goes through, every single BMW accessory that I see fit will be put on that car. The BMW Performance suspension will be one of many parts that will go on that car..... let's hope it goes through!
