portable hard drive question
I have a western digital Passport hard drive. 160gb version [ here is the 80gb of the same thing http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16822136058 ]. I don't have my car yet so i have not gotten to play with it that much.
However, I have music on the drive and last night i was at my dealer and plugged it into an M3 with a USB port. The car was able to power the drive (the light lit up) but it was not able to read it. None of the music showed up. I have not changed the format from how it came and i have mulitlple file types on the drive. So my question is... Have i done something wrong or will this drive not work with the usb option? I would like to get this resolved before my car arrives next week because I want to have my music ready to go when i drive off the lot. Any help is greatly appreciated.

I had the same issue with my WD Passport. You have two choices... use the drive and get a axillary power adapter from the power point, or get a portable HDD that consumes less energy.
The WD drive draws more juice than the car's USB drive can give, in order to make it spin up. Mine would initially light up blue, and then begin blinking, indicating a problem. I have another drive on order right now, that's a 1.8" drive, and draws a lot less. HOPEFULLY, this will work. I'd use my ipod, but I keep inadvertantly leaving it in the car. |

I only have one output on the drive so idk how i would get power from two sources. I do have a power converter that runs off a cig lighter though...
Also, could you send me a link to the drive you ordered. I am interested to see how this will work. My car arrives at the port on saturday so I do still have a little time to figure this out before it arrives here in central PA.

There's an adapter that allows for a 2nd power source to power the drive, like a Y cable, where one end goes to a cigarette lighter adapter, a USB Male connector, and a mini USB connector. I didn't want to have something like that in my car, and I didn;t like the fact that the WD Passport was too big for the built in case (on the bottom of the armrest).
I went with this one: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16822242004 Hopefully it will work for me. I received a damaged one of these already and am RMAing it back to newegg... I'll post my results. This drive is very small, if it works... |

damn. well thanks for the quick response. I'll prob just order it anyway. for less than $70 it isn't that bad. I don't own an IPOD because i bought a diff mp3 player back when i was snowboarding 5 days a week cause i needed something that could take more shock. I am just trying to avioid paying the premium for one now and this could be worth it. Hey, if it doesn't work, i still got a good drive for a decent price.

Cool, I posted in another thread about the Buffalo drives, if you want a bigger drive you can try these but looking at the e90 post they already found a list of working drives. I think the best bet is the cheapest one with the minimum amount of space you think you will need =P I'm glad you got yours to work!

Yeah what I had been reading is the RPM did matter over at e90 post. However, I think this directly correlates to how much power it draws. The faster it spins, the more power it is likely to require to spin up.
