Chains, which wheels?
I've never owned a RWD car so I'm curious... If I need to chain up which tires do the chains go on? The drive tires or the steering tires? This wont be an issue around here for 8+ months, but it was on my mind so I thought I'd ask.

Chains go on the rear (drive) wheels on a BMW. But you might check with a dealer as BMW chains are not recommended (or available, IIRC) for the larger wheel/tire sizes.

Hadn't heard of Auto Sock although it looks interesting. According to Tire Rack, they should be mounted on all four wheels and shouldn't be used over 30 mph.

It is ironic that you can get a ski bag on the 1 but chains are not recommended. Unfortunately here in Cali chains are often required and the CHP will send you back down the mountain if you don't carry them.

Not sure what you guys are talking about, I run chains year round. Traction, especially on the highway, is AMAZING.
