Carplay issue since Feb 2024 update

Since the update, Carplay automatically takes over iDrive upon startup. I usually listen to XM with Carplay running in the background for text alerts etc. XM has always launched first provided it was the last thing I listened to before turning the car off.
Now, the Apple Podcast app automatically launches despite XM being last used. It isnt the last used app on my phone and the podcast that launches isnt even the last listened to podcast on my phone but its the last listened to podcast over Carplay (like a week ago)! I have even had the podcast app take over while I am driving and listening to XM.
I know this has been an issue for others in the past but I have not found a fix other than turning off Carplay, which I have done cuz this is so annoying. I saw mention of something to do with iDrive wifi which I have disabled but it also disables Carplay.
Has anyone else experienced this and found a fix? It is super irritating.

What update? The vehicle or iOS? And which version is now running?

The simple thing to try first is rebooting your phone as basic as that sounds. I would also try to pair a second device (unpair the offending one) and see if you get the same behavior. If not, it’s your device.

Chitown_vroom Good call. I have not tried a reboot but I did remove/add the phone to no avail. I will also try pairing the second phone to eliminate my phone causing the issue.

Also, I am referring to the latest (I am assuming) BMW update. I was notified last week and installed over this last weekend. I was up to date otherwise so the update should be for everyone?????

I have no updates available for my ‘24 X3 M40i but I took delivery the week of Christmas so maybe it had newer software on it already. I’m on 07/2023.50. To the point, I have not experienced any CarPlay issues at all. It works like a dream compared to the udder crap I constantly contended with on my prior wired connection to a Chevrolet (yes, I made a big leap to BMW!)

I just got the notice to install 11.2023.50 yesterday for my MY23. I've noticed that BMW seems to do the updates in waves and I've be a little bit after the first notices started going out for previous updates.

This is my first car with an OTA update function. I got the notice last week, coincidentally just a few days before a previously scheduled appointment for the random/unreliable automatic display of parking view when pulling forward. I was surprised by my years-well-trusted SA's advice not to do updates. He described the requirements, such as a level surface (my driveway is slanted up), leaving the car on 20-30 minutes, longer than a time I wish to sit and observe it outside, and the risk of bricking it and having it towed in, as has happened with others of his customers. His philosophy for updates was, "if it's not broken, don't fix it". He did this update as a courtesy (apparently they usually charge unless it's related to a functional issue being fixed), but said if I was happy with how the car was performing, just let it go.

"but said if I was happy with how the car was performing, just let it go"

For sure these are sage words - and once upon a time I lived by that motto. However, with these days of continuous software updates, the sheeple (and, sadly I include myself in that category) will do the updates :-). In fact it's so bad that even though I KNOW the update will erase my coding and make me more work, I still feel that irresistible urge to dive in :-|

We are but mere lemmings (if you remember the old PC game ;-).

Me too my friend. Me too. And I instantly regret not springing for a hardwired coding adapter.

You're SA is wrong about leaving the car running for the update. You exit the vehicle, lock it, and cannot re-enter it for the 20mins it's installing the update. It doesn't notify you to start the update until the vehicle is turned off.

But, it has to be on, not fully off, true? Key present? I guess the concern is the security of leaving it unattended parked outside?

No, you turn the vehicle completely off, exit, and lock it. You take the key with you.

In that case, I must have misunderstood him. Thanks for clarifying. The rest of his advice is still persuasive to me.

No update for me. I'm too afraid of what "features" they'll introduce (or take away). Last OTA update I did was over two years ago. I disabled them on my phone/car.

As someone who works with regulated software, one aspect to consider would be if any of these OTA updates deal with cybersecurity vulnerabilities. I’m new to BMW so I don’t have any context of what they usually disclose versus don’t but if there are known vulnerabilities that you don’t patch, you’re at potentially high risk. Hopefully (and ideally) they would clearly disclose if a patch was addressing a safety-related issue but who knows.

As you know, our vehicles these days are computers on wheels. With the wrong vulnerability someone could shut the car off while you’re driving, create an uncontrolled acceleration, etc etc etc. Anything connected to the internet needs to be given special care.

In which case BMW, like others vendors already do, need to make that clear.

How many people receive notification to take their pre LCI G01 in for a software update due to cybersecurity vulnerabilities ? These are still computer on wheels connected cars.

Or have mandatory security updates vs optional “feature” updates.

Of course now we’re going down another rabbit hole of what if the vulnerability only exists because one of those successive feature updates. My head hurts now. Need coffee.
