Tints & 3M rock guard
Hey folks, I just found this forum and so far quite impressed with all the opinions and knowledge from fellow members. I too have ordered a 135i and so anxious but really disappointed in the interest rates. I guess BMW is planning on losing a few customers over this but I honestly don't think they care. Anyways I was planning on getting tints and 3m rock guard from dealership. I was wondering if this is good idea or should i take the car elsewhere to get this stuff done. By reading all replies and whatnot, it seems to a concensus that BMW is gouging us. Any advice??

Welcome to 1addicts. There are a couple of general sections that cover those concerns, here's one on the rock guard: http://www.1addicts.com/forums/showthread.php?t=3755
Tinting info is in the Exterior mods section. |

I usually get mine done at the dealership... Never had it done anywhere else. Though generally the dealerships make everything cost more than they really should, I do think its cheaper to go through them on this because they usually have an arrangement with one of the local places where you'd probably take your car anyways.

Problem with getting tints at the dealership is that they will only do the legal tint and here in toronto its 35% but I have that on my current car and its to light for me.. ill probably go 30-25%.

Depends on the dealer, I had 35% done on my previous car all around (no tinting besides factory is allowed in Alberta) and the dealer just said that if anyone asks where I got the tinting done, just respond with "I don't know"

5% is limo tint. I usually get 20% all the way around which is the same as the back side windows on most SUVs. 35% is actually the darkest you can have the front driver and passenger windows though in most states, so most dealers will only do that, but a lot of shops will do 20% everywhere if you ask.

One of the reasons I left this thread intact here was that Canada may have specific regulations regarding tinting - whether that's from Ottowa or varies province by province - these are the Canadian experts. I'm just a visitor in those parts. : -)

Thanks atr_hugo, not sure what its like in the states but the tinting here does vary from province to province and the level of enforcement even varies from time to time (whether it be city to city or cop to cop ).

Well 35% is the legal tint.. I want darker and dealerships in Toronto Ontario don't go any darker.. its just to light according to my current car!

I thought the price for the 3m was pretty decent at BMW...but that said I get my stuff done at Ziebart's. (Southside location). I find they do a great job, and for a good price.
Instead of the 128 I ended up getting a GTI in Feb. The dealer did the 3 m on the hood, they were supposed to do the whole front end, so when I took it in for Tint at Z's the guy confirmed that they had only done the hood...well after a few calls back and forth we got the dealer to agree to pay for the rest of the 3m to be done, so the guy at Z's did the bumper, mirrors, fendors, and threw in a strip along the back bumper where the hatch is. He also fixed the stuff on the hood as it had started to peel off a little bit. :w00t: Next time I'll be taking it straight to them for everything. |

Yeah, I got it done at an establishment in edmonton, it's called Malcolm's tinting... he has pretty much trained most of the guys in the city that now work independently or work at the dealers.
He also gets a whole lot of dealer cars coming in to get 3M or other brands (Ferrari for one use another brand). All the dealer does is get the service for you, with a markup. Get it done somewhere else. Individual dealers don't make anything more than others in the MSRP or so, it's with the xtra charges like these where they make their bread and butter. I'm getting black sapphire and I will definitely get some sort of protective film.

The kits always have gaps around all the edges. You want them custom cutting the 3M material so that it wraps around all of the seams. This costs more but it's well worth it. (or get a kit if you don't care about the look of your car and don't mind visible seams and such, but then why even get 3M in the first place?)

I paid 500 cad for custom fit (so the guy takes a roll and measure your car to make an exact match)

I got quoted 795 for full 3m rock guard an 395 for 5 windows being tinted. My SA also said they will tint them as dark as i want even on the driver an passenger's side. I called some other places in etown and it wasn't that much cheaper for what i wanted on the window tinting. I found 3m cheaper at a few other spots but the savings weren't that significant. Any other recommendations in etown. Thanks fellas. Much appreciated.
