6FL USB/iPod Option Info - View before you order w/o this option!
Here's a few interesting pictures that I found on this 6FL post on e90post. It pretty much guarantees that the 6FL/USB option sees attached devices as Mass Storage:
That's simply a 120gb portable hard drive, available for $75 at NewEgg.com. I would think that 120gb would be enough for anybody's entire music collection, plus some. You could also permanently leave the thing in the car. Since it's rated for portable use, it has some minor shock absorbency, certainly enough for driving around. Also, you don't have to tie up your ipod, or remember to plug it in. I'll be going this route.... |

That's good info. That means it recognizes the ipod. Still though, why tie up your ipod, when you can easily have a more permanent, higher capacity, much cheaper alternative?
I have a hard enough time remembering to take my ipod to work (I have more than an hour each way on the train). Old feeble mind, and all. |

I like the looks of the portable harddrive, too. I'm really not interested in owning an Ipod so the portable drive would be my option also for larger storage. |

Does anybody know how this works without the Nav screen? Could you do that with your radio or would you need the nav screen to navigate through your folders/songs?

Yes, it does. It's obviously a bit harder to navigate with single line text, but it works. It works the same as the iPod navigation works.

thank you larryn, that makes it a viable option for me. I have a sansa, but I also have an 8gb flash drive that could be a more permanent music box if it worked. Before I finalize my order, I will probably end up with every option.

(from e90post as well) Here's a few pics of what it looks like without nav (and an ipod plugged in). A USB powered drive should function exactly the same.

Not sure what deck you get as standard in US?

Track info is displayed in the standard system as well. There is no caveat that you have to order the Premium HiFi to be able to use the 6FL/USB option.

From what my dealer thought (and he wasn't absolutely sure), you could have the USB option on the standard system, but no track information will display... I just didn't see spending $875 for the option, but I was still hoping to be able to navigate my iPod (or other media) with some kind of information.

Standard system on the 328i shows track info... I think your SA might be misinformed.
Edit: 328i in the US gets the BMW Professional system as the base system. I'd assume the 128i and 135i do as well here. |

EDIT: I just looked at the 328i brochure... both audio systems specify that they display MP3 song title and artist, where the 135 brochure only specifies that on the premium system. |

Hmmm. The BMW Business and the BMW Professional head units look different. The Professional has 2 rows of text as well as more buttons for presets and option setting. (4 rocker buttons vs. 6 rocker buttons)
The 135i I saw in Boston did not have Navi, but did have the Professional head unit in it, looking at my car show pics. I think BMW would be in for a world of hurt if they sell the 6FL option to people, and don't show track info. Might as well just use the Auxillary input... Yet another interesting question... |

They never specify Navi Pro or BMW Pro head unit, because that's all we got in the past... Unless something changed with the 1 series, we should get the Pro head unit in it as well.

I'm not sure... I know we have to upgrade to get the 10 speaker system, but I don't know if it comes with a different deck or not...
EDIT: I just looked at my LA auto show pics, and they had the Pro deck in that... I don't know how much that means, but it's kinda encouraging. |
