Track performance -- expectations

There are already reports (from Europe) of how it'll notch way up there, above many pure sports cars on a closed track. In fact, those vehicles that can regularly edge the 135i seems so few that we can count them with one hand, though we haven't even seen a full-blown road test yet for the 1.

If you do take your vehicle to the track (for timing or skills-honing purposes, sure), which "normal" cars would you expect to still get ahead of it easily?

(Normal meaning roughly under $70k, because supercars are obviously in their own class)

Don't know where you are getting your information, but all the reviews I've read says the the 135i plows at the limit and is tuned for comfort rather than the track. One review even called it plush. To call that kind of performance "above many pure sports cars" is absurd.

There are a good many vehicles under 70K that will probably show the 135i up on the track, in stock configurations. Of course these type of comparisons mean so little because there are so many different variables that go into this comparison, but to keep it simple:
Corvette
Cayman/Boxster S
Sti
EVO
Exige
M3 (price?)
C63 (price?)
GT500KR
Z4M
Cobalt SS Turbo (8:22 around the ring is pretty impressive)

However, that is just an estimation. Track size, type, elevation, weather, etc could affect all vehicles in their performance on a track.

Speaking of EVO and STi, which were pure gibberish code to me (as was the entire list above) until I googled them, I now wonder how the montego blue 135i would fare in this 2003 comparison.

hopefully I can get stationed in germany next and be 50 miles from the ring!

I am slightly sceptical about not having a limmited slip diff though. not too sure about the effectivness of BMWs electronic solution but I havent driven with it yet.

Will definitely be tracking/lapping my 135i.

Hopefully there's not too much that'll need tweaking/changing to make it fun/competitive (other than tires).

Have to wait and see.

Yes, I hope at least 5% of my 135i's life will be on a track.

No way unless it's a NASCAR oval. Understeer appears to be an issue with the 135i. It's not an out of the box track car.

You might read the reviews that have been coming out. Sounds like you'll need to do some serious tuning to be competitive on the track, unless you get a kick out of understeer...

^ I doubt it, but it will be a close comparision...

I wonder what auto-x class the 135i will be in. Thats mostly the "tracking" I do...

I guess I'm not the type of person that "has" to outdo everyone. I would be buying the 135i because its what I want and would fit my needs...

If it is chipped and exhaust modded, yes no question. Stock it will be close. I think it depends on the track. On a tight track with a lot of elavation changes, I think the 135i with more torque gets better times, but on a big flat track I think the M3 wins.

With either the 128 or 135, they're too expensive for me to take to the track.

Stock vs Stock, it would come down entirely down to the type of track and the driver.

However with equally solid drivers driving 10/10th of the capability of the cars in stock configuration, the e46 M3 should win hands down.

what makes a street car a good track car?

to me, it is track capability with minimal modification. anyone can make a race car out of any car with enough modification.

what would the 135i need?

1. brake pads/ tires. any car except a 911 gt3 with ceramic brakes would need these too.

2. bbk? prob not- the brakes look pretty generous to me.

3. suspension? more a matter of taste than a track must-have. odds are a rear sway would help dial out some understeer, but those are pretty cheap.

4. engine mods? prob the least necessary, but the most often done.

for myself, i'd do brake pads, lightweight rims, track tires, ss brake lines to start out with. later on, suspension, chip/exhaust, lsd if available. i bet this combo would make a phenomenal track car/daily driver.

Torque shouldn't be a major factor on a track. Any self respecting driver would keep the M3 on boil as much as possible which would give it plenty of power to negotiate the track elevations.

To be honest anyone who jumps right on to mods (with exception of pads) without tracking the car first in stock form is just going to waste money.

I normally change my pads before I have my cars teched at the track. I also bleed my brakes the night before any track event.
Those will likely be the very first things I do to the car before anything else.
That way I will be sure to set a good baseline to test from and will know what I need for my skill level to get those magic extra 10th or even seconds from my lap times.

The 335i did it in 8:26, so I'd expect the 135i to edge the Cobalt. And the E46 M3, which also did 8:22 at the Ring.

But yes, that's very impressive for the Cobalt SS, if it was stock. (I say this because GM has been trotting souped-up Cobalts at many tracks/events, and they have a fabulous performance catalog for it).

My guess is that the (front) tires will be the most compromised part of the package for track driving, seconded perhaps by the pads.
