Call me crazy, but I'm kind of partial to the non-M Sport body - front airdam in particular. And I love that cloth-on-leather interior....

No too sure, but I think Winding Road likes what they see:wink:.

Do you understand the article to say that we'll get the auto along with the manual, or just the auto. I can't imagine it's the latter, but feel the need to be reassured.

Sounds like they loved it. And btw, the talk of the auto sounds like talk of the DSG esque tranny that BMW has been developing :w00t:.

That could be...it's an interesting article.
But I'll take the 6-speed manual anyday- especially from BMW.
Go over onto any Audi forum...most people who get DSG/paddles, the whole schmeer, admit that they eventually just stop shifting for themselves and let the auto take over.
For me, manual shifting is one of the real joys of driving.

I'm excited to see the auto options, though it's still up in the air...

Sounds like a 6 Speed DSG from BMW though...

Absolutely. It's not really about the performance, although it usually is a nice plus. Driving an auto is just so boring. go stop go stop go stop go stop

I don't like the way the wheels look on the non M sport equipped car, I'd have to see different style rims on such a car before I can say I'm partial to it or not, but for now I'm partial to the M sport kit. - BMW NA really needs to consider the M sport package as an option package for all BMW models sold in the U.S., if Europe can get it, so too should we. Can't yap about this enough.

im just hoping it will include a shadowline trim option, or that we'll see it at some point. im surprised they were as kind in their opinions of the back seat as they were - but very very glad. haha "brit dork"

I'd really like to read from an auto journal who knows what they're talking about, oppose to "Winding Road", they're staff never seems to have their facts straight. We're not going to get a 6 spd auto only, we're getting both a slush box and a clutch pedal, just so happens March '08 is when the 6spd auto comes on board for the 1er coupe internationally, at which time we'll be seeing the first 1er coupes available here.

Hopefully they're spot on with the interior room assessment, as this would make a great long term ownership proposition throughout various life stages. This is of concern to me as I probably won't be buying my next car til I'm 27-28, where I will have the car for a long time, into marriage and perhaps children.

If there's any single item on the exterior of a BMW that's crucial to setting off the car's design, it's the wheels-
and typically they do get it right. But some of the wheel designs we've seen thus far on non-M-Sport 135's have been pretty bad.
Actually, from what we've seen the only wheel that looks like a winner are the 18" 5 spokes. & they are gorgeous.

Strange to see BMW using the Munich museum while it's still under construction. A mini-press debut for the 1-er that looks very underwhelming.
Why do I feel like I'm looking ringside in a strip club?
I imagine the official kick-off in September at Frankfurt will be spectacular. I wonder if they'll devise a big splash at the LA show...which is really the beginning of it's introduction into N/A.
Oh, check out the signage..the 1-er is a 2008 model.

In Europe it will be an 2008, no doubt about it, but when it comes to the US it will be introduced as a 2009. BMW NA has done this quite a bit in the past, most recently the facelifted 2008 E60 5-Series which came out this past April. BMW NA will not sale 5 months (April - Aug) of a 2008 MY when the actual 2009 production begins in Sept. 2008. Talk about killing the resale value. A years worth of depreciation in 5 months! :eyebulge:

BTW, The E90 3-Series US launch was held in May of 2005 with the 325/330i being a 2006 MY.

Too bad about that Driver- it's as if the N/A market is catching some breaks.:biggrin:
2008 model Europe
2009 model N/A

Take It Off Baby!

The 1-er is just gorgeous. It's not tied to a specific moment in the way that the (eg) Z4 is.
Instead it seems to float above time...in what Jean Baudrillard called "the eternal present".
And you can see why I love undoctored photos...no photoshop hi-lites.
The car really doesn't need artificial glamor. It's just perfect. No 2nd guessing from me.

Me too... I'm hoping this will be my next car when it comes out, but ONLY with the manual...

I was VERY glad to read confirmation in the article that the aero look in the photos will indeed be the NA configuration!

I was quite surprised by these comments from Winding Road:
"We sat in the back seats and had a guy our own size sit in front and try to crush our legs. No can do, since there was very healthy room for knees and feet. There was also good space for heads in back, which was another good surprise."
I would think the rear seats of the coupe will be very small so that seems a it strange, unless the WR writer is 5" tall of course...
