HELP Needed! Car history report red flags
Looking to purchase a used 2019 M5C on Facebook market, but the car history report I pulled from AutoCheck has me concerned. The car has 56k miles on the odometer, but the car report shows it being only titled/registered once that happened 2 weeks ago. The reported mileage at the time was 2k. Seems odd that it was never registered for 4 years and the huge increase in mileage in such a short time. Am I missing something and should I be concerned? Is there anyone here who works at a BMW dealership able pull more info or maintenance if I provide a VIN?

Pretty sure They can’t pull maintenance from The vin. They need a key. And support the dealer manager car. Probably registered a dealer tag. Not sure how that stuff works though.

Yep, I confirmed the date on the report. The car was titled for the first time 2 weeks ago. The current seller said he got it for cheap from the dealer and was looking to just flip it. Just wanted to confirm there isn’t anything fishy going on. Would a dealership use a M5C as a demo up to ~56k miles?

CPO doesn’t really mean much. If it’s used, the golden rule is two PPIs by two separate entities that examine software and internals — CPO or otherwise. We’ve seen multiple CPO cars on here have extreme problems that could have been avoided by having a proper PPI that would have discovered the vehicle’s problems before the sale.

I remember my first cpo car, a dodge charger srt 392... alignment was so fked in the rear one tire was pointing straight up and down while the other was at like a 45 degree angle and I didn't even realize it somehow.... even after trying their best they couldn't align it in spec, they used camber links that dodge actually sells for situations like this, moved the engine cradle and stoll was in the red just slightly... and then going down the highway my whole wheel broke off... brakes hub everything. That's what a "CPO" gets ya!

Doesn't the "Certified" in CPO just mean that they they certify that "yes, the car was indeed owned by someone before you"

I assumed
They if a car has been tuned they can’t CPO it. And if I buy it and it’s CPO, the. It blows up, and they say “it blew up because it was tuned BEFORE we sold it to you as a CPO” they are paying to fix it…. No way they can CPO it - and deny a claim for a tune that PREdated the CPO

The exact situation you described has happened many times and will continue to happen so long as people buy used cars, CPO or otherwise, without proper PPIs.

To the OP - honestly, there are so many used M5s available now, I would just chalk it up as potentially escaping a messy scenario, and look at another one. Especially if you smell a rat.

Agree! Also.. in general dealers aren’t known for just offering such great deals on [used] cars that someone can buy it, pay taxes on top of it (i guess state dependent), and sell the car privately to make a profit. That part strikes me as odd but what do I know. 😂

Lol I think the above regarding the dealer denying a warranty claim on a CPO car because they claim it was tuned before they certified it is ridiculous and would not fly.
Such an assertion would expose the dealership to liability for fraud and punitive damages. I would take that case if the dealer made such an admission on contingency even. |

The car you’re buying is a car that was driven on dealer’s plates and it was never titled until two weeks ago by someone who might want to “flip” it. The miles look ok for a 4yo car so you should be ok. Vehicle history reports are not always correct.

I was looking at a used 428 for my son. I got the carfax (guy who I know does it for $10) and it showed a period of time that it was not registered and showed oil service at a place in Ohio and other services in a place in NY state over that period of time. The dealer was using the car to go back and forth for parts or other such things. So for a time it was 'driven like you stole it' so I did not buy it.
Sounds like a car that could be 'ok' if inspected well and at the right price. Mike
