Coupe dimensions
Anyone have any ideas what to compare the 1er coupe to stateside to get an idea for size? I haven't had the chance to research specs and am running out the door right now.

Probably a good comparison would be the three door 130i. So here's a translation of specs from the UK site:
Wheelbase ~ 104" Height ~ 56" Width ~ 76" Length ~ 166" Weight (130i 3 dr) ~3252 lbs |

A slight change in plans, so here I am: I was hoping to get cars for comparison that are available stateside, appreciate the info just the same. I have actually seen the 1er five and two door on three occasions here though, in passing, in a caravan of BMW's. There's a development and testing facility north of where I live in Oxnard, and the roads are somewhat deserted out here so they can drive the cars in relative seclusion, away from prying eyes- except for mine.

Wheelbase ~ 106.3" (2.3" longer) Height ~ 52.6" (3.4" shorter) Width ~ 67.3" (8.7" narrower) Length ~ 174.5" (8.5" longer) Weight ~3175 lbs (77lb lighter) Now compare to the original E30 M3: Wheelbase ~ 100.9" (3.1" shorter) Height ~ 53.9" (2.1" shorter) Width ~ 66.1" (9.9" narrower) Length ~ 171.1" (5.1" longer) Weight ~2646 lbs (606lb lighter) And to the original 2002tii: Wheelbase ~ 98.4" (7.6" shorter) Height ~ 55.5" (0.5" shorter) Width ~ 62.6" (13.4" narrower) Length ~ 166.5" (0.5" longer) Weight ~ 2310 lbs (942lb lighter) If you notice, they were pretty faithful to the height and length of the 2002. The weight is unfortunate, but in a world of safer cars, luxuries, and electronics, 3252 is still fairly lightweight.

"Good point, bruiserk18. If you look at the dimensions quoted in the UK press release: 4360mm long and 1934mm wide and compare it to an E46 M3: 4492mm long and 1780mm wide, I think the proporations are going to be awesome. I think many of the pictures and videos that we're seeing must be distorted somehow cause the car looks tall and thin in so many of them." I think it'll be very much along the lines of an E46 coupe dimensionally, but even wider which would make it awesome looks-wise and handling-wise. I think you can see the wider stance in the latest official pictures. I think you can also see the relative size in the picture below of the dark grey car in the mall parking lot where it's parked next to an A3 or A4. I was concerned initially that it was going to be too small, like the MINI, but I think it's going to look quite substantial. |

Found the dimensions of the 1er coupe and converted them to U.S. measurements:
Length: 171.6 Width: 76 Height, whlb., track, etc. were not detailed in the U.K. press release. Suffice to say the 1er coupe is actually a bit bigger than I assumed it would, I really thought it'd be a "tiny tim", pint size car, though still small it's a nice size. Thank you BMW! I was almost afraid this car would be too small for me. |

Pulled this from an Edmunds article, this part details the comparison in dimensions between the E21 and 02:

Length: 171.6
Width: 76 Something is waaaay off here guys!!!! There is no way the 1 series is wider than a 7series. In fact I gave up trying to find something in the 76inch width range.

Well - the UK site showed width from edge to edge of the exterior mirrors, so I wonder if that may be it. Let me look to see if they show width w/o mirrors in the mix.

I also found in a little further research yesterday, that the Boxster/Cayman are the exact same length as the 1er coupe. However all oif this research in comparing dimensions will prove somewhat fleeting in the end. Only because every car has a unique design that gives a different impression dimensionally, you'd be surprised with some of the tricks designers come up with to accentuate different aspects of dimension. |

Frankly, i don't care how Bangle-ized this car is. I just want that N54B30 twin-turbo in the lightest car I can get. Man, I hope they have sunroof delete as an option.

This is the darn widest & heaviest small, light driver's car I've seen in some time. I think BMW needs to sharpen its pencil a bit more before production begins.
