on the second picture, it looks like the whole front has been crumbled up all the way to the windshield. Can the engine bay push out through the front in the drivers and passenger seat cause i think it would squeeze the 2 people against the seats and the front part of the car.

I'm not quite sure what you're saying but I believe the second picture is an offset crash test (off-center). If that was a straght-on crash the engine would wind up sitting on the front passengers' laps, and that wouldn't be good.

Not in terms of safety it doesn't! It appears the windshield is intact. That's amazing.

if there is enough force, the crumple zone will force engine downwards, not backwards. thus ejecting it, and letting you keep your legs.

Glad you said it.
Almost every issue of BMW magazine has photos sent in from readers who've been involved in God-awful crashes in their BMW's-
from 7-ers to Z4's and it's amazing how many people just walk away with minor bruises.
Of course what you don't see are the fatal crashes or the driver/passenger photos of maimed and severely injured.
Sxxx happens.

As ichiban already mentioned, the engine drops when the impact is severe enough. Cars have been engineered like this for years, because of the situation that you mentioned.

If you are worried about safety, BMWs are a good choice for you, as they are very safe cars...for a number of reasons. You may be interested in this link:

I think it is even more important that a car come with good side impact protection, as this is where you are most vulnerable to injury or death. It was very rainy this morning in Los Angeles, and I had the misfortune of seeing someone on the freeway who most likely spun out in front of someone in another lane and was broadsided on the driver's side door. This caused the side of the broadsided drivers head to go through his side window.

It must've taken me 10 minutes to get up to the accident scene due to traffic, but the guy that got broadsided had not been removed from his vehicle. His head was leaning out the window, and he had a trickle of blood coming out his nose. I'm not sure if he survived, but he may have been able to walk away from the crash if he had side curtain airbags.

Sometimes it isn't so pretty

Jan '06 - Vancouver BC. Three young men from the same family died in this one. One survivor. High speed, sideways into a freeway off ramp light standard. The car (5 series) was severed in half. Speed can kill. Drive safely.

Here you can see pic's and videos from most BMW models. compare E36,E46 and E90 and you'll see the difference.
