is 2-series coupe or cab the "all-new" car is coming from BMW at the British Autoshow

Yesterday, BMW announced plans for an “innovative and dramatic” presence at the British International Motor Show in July. While no specifics of the automaker’s “stunning plans” were given, BMW officials insisted they’d “re-write the rule book” of auto show stands with the so-called BMW Plaza. In its announcement, the automaker said it would debut a new model at the show, but many observers dismissed this as the already-unveiled 2007 3-Series coupe. However, the U.K.’s WhatCar? magazine today reported that the new Bimmer is “definitely not” the 3-Series coupe or the next-generation Mini, but rather an entirely new model. Possible introductions include a new 1-Series variant or the M6 Convertible. Jaguar is expected to show the new XKR at the show, while Land Rover will unveil the new LR2/Freelander, and Mazda will premier the MX-5 hardtop convertible. Let the speculation begin…

I hope so, but I'm a little afraid it could be the M6 convertible.

If rumors of a 2007 2-series are accurate we wouldn't really expect it yet though anyway, would we?

I'm not much of an expert, but it seems that BMW doesn't officially show cars until they're within about 6 months from production.

So we might get the M6 in (July?) and still get the 2-series late this year or early next for mid 2007 production.

Gary is probably right the 2er is still too far away to be unveil now? :iono: But lets keep fingers crossed.

Yea you are right, it is seemingly less and less likely that it will be the 2-series, but it was some very wishful thinking. I still will hold out hope for a BMW surprise! I mean we diserve something like this, i've personally been waiting about 6 years for a car like this !!!

Even if we don't see it, they may at least confirm more definitely that it's coming and when.

Last year my dealer absolutely assured me that we would be getting a 1 series variant in the US soon, but he said it would be something sportier than the European hatch.

(Of course he probably gets his information off the internet like the rest of us.)

I'm not sure if this is good news or bad news.

BMW unveiled the M6 convertible today:

http://www.worldcarfans.com/news.cfm...m6-convertible

My first response was: "Cool! That means the M6 drop-top won't be the new car unveiled at the British show."

. . . but then I thought a bit more, and I thought it still might be the first time they actually display the M6 conv.

Gary, I think your second thought might be correct. I bet it's the M6 cabrio that debuts in England. :frown:

Seems like it's been maybe too quiet on the 1-series/2-series coupe/cab front for them to debut the car :iono: I'd love to be pleasantly surprised tho!

I would too...but Harold, I think you're also right about the 1&2 series debuts.
We'll be hearing lots of drumrolls and throat-clearing from BMW before we get the cars.

Here's the answer to the BIMS/BMW Debut;
BMW M6 Convertible to debut at the British International Motor Show
21 June 2006/AP

BMW’s fastest ever soft-top, the BMW M6 Convertible, will make its debut at the British International Motor Show (July 18 – 30). Powered by the award-winning 5.0-litre V10 engine and using a host of F1-derived technology, the BMW M6 Convertible combines all the performance of the M6 Coupé but with the added luxury of open-air motoring.

The M6 Convertible goes on sale in the UK in September 2006. It becomes the first ever BMW to make a British Motor Show debut and it is the first time a BMW M version of a 6 Series Convertible has been built.

To confirm that the M6 convertible will be the new car debuting at the British Auto Show, the event's site has even confrimed it.

yeah you really need an v10 engine with 507hp in a cabrio. I drove a few days ago an m3 cabrio. Also a pointless car. above 120km an hour there is soo much wind and sound you get crazy about it.

if you buy a cabrio buy a 1.6 engine more than enough.

I've been assuming the M6 was it for a while now, and I've seen it listed as officially debuting for some time now . . .

. . . BUT, we've seen the M6 Conv., and we've known it was coming for a while. The M6 (while it's true no one has seen it in the metal yet) doesn't seem to match the excited tone of the original report.

It may be foolish optimism, but I'm still hoping for something. We could at least get a confirmation that a 2 is coming even if they don't show it.

Does the M6 convertible "re-write the rulebook"? Is it an "entirely new model"?:iono:

Maybe, but I think that wording leaves us some hope.

For your further consideration:

The original story was in the middle of May. In the middle of June, we got this:

http://www.worldcarfans.com/news.cfm...tible-revealed

So I while the M6 convertible would be interesting to see, it certainly doesn't seem exciting enough to justify the original hype if this is what they'll show.

I've been wondering the same thing. I haven't heard any BMW news from the show at all. Maybe it was the M6, but nobody cared because we've already seen it. In any case, I haven't seen anything to indicate BMW justified the hype in any way.:iono:

The official London Auto Show site only mentions the M6 from BMW.
By the way some of the debuts are sort of hokey...the "World Debut" of the Honda Civic...the "World Debut" of the Mazda MX-5 (otherwise known as the Miata)...
not even old wine in new bottles but simply an occasion to tout models that have been on the market for awhile.

IIRC, both the Civic (a new 3-door hb model) and the MX-5 (a new folding hard-top version) are world debuts.

Still, we would have heard by now it seems if there was a significant new BMW unveiling...
