Replacing driveline fluids

Hey all. Longtime e83 owner (207k miles currently), and will likely be moving on to a G01 in the near future. I've started to narrow down what I want (looking at 2020+ MY M40i), and have been trying to understand what it will take to maintain this vehicle for the long term. I've been doing all of my own work for a few years now, and want to continue that trend.

So, given that, I've been trying to find DIYs on fluid changes for diffs, xfer case, and the transmission, but haven't found anything (perhaps my search terms haven't been correct). Please, no thoughts on these having lifetime fluids; I plan to change them on any vehicle I own long term. Has anyone on here attempted these, and if so, anything hinky with the process? I have to take my x3 this weekend for their second crack at the PCV heater recall, so I'll ask my SA about it while I'm there...he seems relatively competent. Thanks for any thoughts on this.

Shout out to mattsheng He is truly a great asset to folks on this site.

After having spent a lifetime around rotating machinery I'll chime in and agree with the OP there is no such thing as lifetime fluids. Only fluids that will last until you're past the warranty period. My SA at my local dealership agreed with me on that.

This is great info! Thanks for your reply to my question. I wish search worked better, might be better off scrolling through the forum!

Looks like the B58B30O1 AWD calls for 7.2L vs 6.5L - first I saw that. Based on the instruction it looks applicable to a drain and fill, guess I am glad I ordered 8L rather than 7L!

Off topic question, is the oil pan actually bigger or does this include oil lines and cooler that ultimately drain back when the car is off?

I also noticed that in the pdf says 7.2 L oil. I bought oil from dealer and he gave me only 7 liter based on my vin number. He said I need 6.5L. I guess I should buy one more.

I am a little confused with the transfer case. Looks like you need to trigger “oil change” that opens up the chambers for full evacuation and possibly triggers some adaptation reset?

Anyone know what tool does this? I was reading something on ISTA but honestly got super confused there on what is needed and how to get it. I will keep reading, but wanted to ask.

There is an ABL function in ISTA for changing transfer case oil. The ABL basically pushes the rod and connects the 2 oil chambers. See the attached pictures for the location of the ABL function in ISTA and a description of the divided transfer case oil chamber system.
