Bandimere for the 1/4 mile stuff...
Pikes Peak Track for all the other stuff... (but not really near Denver)

thanks for the reply.
please bear with me. i've never been to tracks in my life. i'd like to try bandamere first. can i just go anytime of the day? or would i need to make an appt? do i need to bring anything with me?is there a person there who will guide through the whole process? also 1/4mi seems awefully short. is it a straight track where u go as fast as in 1/4mi, make a stop and then make a u-turn? there's no circular track in bandimere where i can do several laps at full speed? will the pike peaks let me do that? thanks |

Join the RMCBMWCCA and sign up for the HPDE weekend at Pueblo motorsports park. Pueblo is not all that close, but its all we really have UNTIL THIS GETS BUILT
BTW, Bandimere is not open during the winter, and opens back up in March usually...and yes, unless you have a Kart, bandimere is just a 1/4mi drag strip. Pueblo and PPIR are the ones you want if you want to take corners fast, legally. |

Correct on the Bandimere info above...
And when it does open in March you can go up any WEDNESDAY for like $10 and run as many runs as you can get in. Yes they will check your car over and answer any questions you have - good group of people.

Their website says they anticipate opening for the 2009 race season, which is usually late March...so we will see.
Think I am finally going to the HPDE this spring, so I can burn off the rest of my tires before I get new ones, lol. Anyone else planning on going? |

Dammit, I need to try to make it to one as well, but schedule conflicts have prevented me from going for a few years now. I haven't been to any since I've picked up the E90, and it'll be interesting to actually have some power over my poor old E30 gasping for air.
Really looking forward to seeing High Plains, by the way. The track should have a bit of everything, from hairpin turns to long straights to elevation changes and blind corners.

Yes, I would recommend the BMW Club. They are, bar none, the best for people who have never been to the track before.
You get classroom sessions and an in-car instructor. Be prepared to be embarrassed, however. I have seen, in the beginner groups, guys in supercharged M3s getting nearly lapped by guys in 318tis. That said, you learn some really cool stuff. And damn, it's fun. |

NASA (www.nasarockymountain.com) is running an event there in April, which I will attend. It'd be great to see some other E90/E92 there! |

While I have a lot of respect for NASA events, I still think the BMW CCA events are better for beginners. Unfortunately, there won't be BMW club event there until 2010 at the earliest. I personally wouldn't waste my time driving Pikes Peak.

I won't disagree with you that BMW events are the best for beginners. NASA is good for stretching your legs after learning the basics.
That said, NASA is dependent on who you get as an instructor. Those of us reared in the BMW school ways end up passing along that same level/detail of knowledge. If you get a cowboy instructor (gee, so your first time on track? You will love those Rcomps you're running!), you probably won't learn much. Bottom line - if you do NASA, search out us BMW guys. There are at least 5 of us who instruct with them. Or start out with BMW club...the instruction/car control clinic / classtime are impeccable. |

E30 - you should break the club barrier and come to a NASA event. There will be at least 4-5 RMCBMWCCA members there, as usual.
I will be at the open day on Friday 4/17 and teaching at the NASA event on 4/18-19. With your experience, I'm sure you can jump right into HPDE4 / TT after a quick test and have a blast. It's open passing without point-bys, so it can get a little hairy, but take solace in that people who want to get into HPDE4 have to do the "4 cars circling your car while driving at 7/10ths around the track" test. Makes for some pretty traffic aware folks. And everyone has a healthy respect for E92s. |

Unfortunately, that is a kid weekend so Dad responsibilities take precedent. Need to get some part time track wheels and tires on order too. Unlike you, I don't feel the need anymore to generate ultimate grip so will settle for something streetable to maximize utility.

If you're going to get a second set of wheels/tires for track use, why would you settle for a set of streetable tires? Part of the draw of having two sets of tires/wheels is that I can run my track tires to hell on track and even if I cord or puncture a track tire, I can still get home on my normal wheels/tires. Another advantage is that it allows me to run my tires down to the cords (10 days on a set of NT01s) without worrying about how I'm going to get home. LOL - if I wanted ultimate grip, my setup would be very different than it is right now. |
