Turbo spool sounds
So, I've been trying to figure out what is the main contributor to a more pronounced turbo spool swooshing sound during acceleration.. I drove a tuned M5 that had downpipes and possibly a CAI, and it had a nice spool sound that I want to replicate on mine along with a more aggressive exhaust.. Will a CAI do it? like the AWE one, or is that mostly due to downpipes or possibly the tune?
Thanks |

Turbo inlets, charcoal filter delete and higher flow filters will add induction noise. A complete intake will as well. This can be sort of a whistle sound at times.
As note above, though, the real turbo spool sound is from an uncorked exhaust eliminating restriction. Secondaries help but also adding high flow cats or catless primaries do more. Tune won’t do much for turbo spool but is good for burbles if you like that. |

Or, maybe just adding the Dinan CAI if it’s on par with Eventuri(?) |

I have Eventuri intake and inlets. I did the inlets several months after the intakes. I did not really notice much difference in sound adding the inlets. If you hold the stock inlet and Eventuri side-by-side they really don’t look very different inside (form wise) — so I’m not sure where more sound would come from anyway. The intakes make a huge difference.

Secondary catless downpipes and BMS intakes. I just swapped my BMS intakes for Dinan ones and not only I did not gain anything, but the cool intake sound is gone. Save your money!

Say goodbye to the cats and get a front intake -- mine sounds like a cummins at all times!

Here is a short video of my car with ER primary and secondaries catless downpipes. It’s loud, but does sound incredible.

What I’m wondering/debating about getting the Eventuri intake and inlets: Will I notice much sound improvement given my current stage of mods?
MPE Catless secondaries Dinan inlets BMC filters with charcoal delete OR, would a front mount intake like RK Tunes be better for sound? |

Has there been any testing as to the front mounts blocking radiators? I understand the engine can still cool, but with surface area being covered I feel like it has to work harder.

Truth is I’ll likely just continue contemplating it until something used pops up again or someone on here saying they went from my setup or similar to full Eventuri and noticed XX% sound gain. Doesn’t take a lot to convince me to part with money lol! Last edited by NCRob; 06-25-2023 at 06:32 AM.. |

For the most noise, use cone filters that are not covered. My guess is they would be loudest if in the engine bay rather than behind the grilles. I like the full Dinan system the most, but would also expect it to be pretty quiet. For the most noise possible, I would focus on the exhaust. A loud enough exhaust will drown out the intake.

I would study those and the BMS version closely to see whether you could adapt them to the Dinan turbo inlets. Probably it could be done by cutting back the connection to the cone filter and using a silicone coupler with a merge transition like 3.5” at the filter to 5” at the Dinan inlet. Those flexible couplers can be squeezed oval. But I would worry this would stress the already loose connection of the Dinan inlets to the turbos and cause air leaks and problems unless you designed a good support system for the piping/tubing after the Dinan inlet.
Might just be better off buying a system that starts at the turbo. Sell the Dinan inlets. I am not sure what systems start at the turbo and leave cone filters in the engine bay but there may be some. And with a loud enough exhaust, how much of this intake sound will you hear? Is it even worth the trouble if this is being done for sound rather than any performance benefit? There is also a visual benefit if you like to open your hood to show off you engine bay. |
