M3 not starting (when key is in the car)

So, my car refused to start today.

It says "key not detected".

So, I placed the key at the steering column, and tried. Nothing

I went to the nearby store to get new batteries for my car remote, still nothing.

I called the tow truck driver. He tried checking the battery and finds that the battery is fine.

My car is now at the Service Centre, and the latest update is that my car needs to stay for a few days for troubleshooting.

Any advise guys?

You believe one of us would have a better advise than the qualified person at the Service center?

My advice is to make a cup of coffee and wait for the Service Centre to call you and tell you it's fixed and to come get the car.

Hope it's fixed soon!

Did this happen with just the one key or both keys?

Ah, I was looking for anyone who's encountered similar issue, and perhaps advise on the matter

Whether it is fix time, parts replaced or just a software update

Both, I went to get the second key, the car still does not recognise the keys (key 1 with old and new battery, and key 2 with old battery)

This has happened a few times. What I do is exit the vehicle, let it auto lock upon walking away. Give it a few and come back to approach the car. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't and you just wait til the car goes to sleep mode and retry. Not sure if its cause of the new updates or what but it has happened more in the past 30 days.

BMW says there are no fault codes.

They are returning the car back to me with a factory reset.

Hopefully it does not happen to me again.....

Yep. Same problem happened to me today on my '23 G80 M3. Neither of the two keys will initiate a start at all! It will lock and unlock the door and open the truck. And the card key will initiate a start. But neither key. Batteries changed and no help. CA says likely needs to be re-programmed. Why it happened who knows?!? Only has 1500 mi.

Do you guys have digital key on G80s?

Curious if those fail as well.

It probably just doesn’t accept you as it’s owner.

Best advice is to sleep with it for a few nights, cuddle, and say nice things. That generally resolves the “refuses to start” issues.

So this happened to me a few days ago... 2023 M3 Comp, 5k miles.

Key fob unlocked the car fine, went to start and got "key not detected" message. Held the key up to the steering wheel, no go.

Called BMW Roadside and they got a "Remote Master Technician" on the phone with me. He tried to remote into the car and reset it; of course that didn't work. He then proceeds to ask me if I have a 10MM wrench handy...I'm like no, sorry I don't carry around a toolset in my new $100k car!

He said I needed to remove the negative terminal connector on the battery in the trunk and leave it disconnected for 5 mins, then reattach and it should hard reset the BDC. 4 hours later BMW's hired tow truck shows up, the guy finally is able to find a 10MM and does what they suggested. (in the dark and rain mind you). Car started right up.

I was relieved they didn't have to tow it but also pissed this even happened. All while I'm stuck in a pay by the hour parking lot in downtown Boston with the meter running

Never in all my years of driving has a car stranded me somewhere...this was completely unacceptable.

Thanks for posting this very valuable information. Here is the SIB that is mentioned that I bolded in your quote above.

https://bmwrepairguide.com/sib/612520.pdf

Although it does not indicate the G80 is applicable, looks like it does.

People give Tesla crap but this is the kind of thing that Tesla gets right. By creating and programming all their own modules, they prevent these kinds of issues where various control modules simply stop talking to one another and need to be reset.

Good to know. Thank you for this.

My car also recently failed to register my key. The car is also nearly brand new, less than a month old.

These things happen sometimes and i must say its really hard trying to figure out the problems yourself,so I'd say you did the right thing taking it to the technicians, just wait it out and goodluck.
