It will have two clutches. One for gears 1-3-5 and one for gears 2-4-6, right?
As one gear lets out the next is engaged. It's s'posed to be much smoother shifting, yet not as sporty as the SMG. I drove a Jetta TDI DSG this weekend. At low speeds 1-3 mph the tranny seemed to get a little confused as to whether it should be in gear or not. We didn't try any manual shifting. It certainly could be the best of both worlds though. Looking forward to trying it in a bimmer.

But the last time I got info I heard they hadnt yet decided what they would use in the M3. Both systems were apparently being tested side by side

they are long due for an SMG upgrade. i kind of thought that when they finally release something new, it will blow current competition away.

I've driven GTI's and A3's with both DSG and manuals. DSG is a great setup and at Audi's Streets of Tomorrow in Philly, I was able to hustle the DSG A3 around the course much faster & smoother than the stick. Having said that, the stick was a hell of a lot more fun for me and I'd get that just for the involvement factor. Although DSG doesn't have a torque converter, I'd still call it an "automatic" because it'll shift itself if you leave in Drive. It can also perfectly rev match every time, nail every downshift without blinking (6th to 2nd I think in around 0.9 seconds) and the upshifts are faster than you can think. Faster on the track, easier to live with in nasty traffic - there's a lot to like about it. Be interesting to see how BMW's version comes out. The Audi/VW setup is awfully good IMHO.

Any idea if this trans uses a clutch pedal, or does the computer do all the thinking for you? The issues that I hear about with Automanual transmissions (Maserati and Ferrari) is that they fry the clutch in stop and go driving, especially in hilly areas. Backing up, up a hill, is sure death for one. The paddles on the steering wheel are cool and everything, but replacing the clutch at 12,000 miles would take the joy out of that real soon. |

I've driven an Audi A3 3.2 S-line with DSG and the transmission was superb. This kind of system with paddle shift is the future. I cant wait.
If I am lucky enough to be able to move to a higher spec with my next car it will be a real challenge to decide whether to go 330 or stay with 325 and have the box. No I've decided... The box wins... Now if I could just swing a 'Sport' too. |

Ok I prefer a car with a third pedal for the clutch that I can manually operate. Is that better. BTW I like you wheels on your 325i.
