Brakes

I have a 2004 x3. I bought it used and haven't had the brakes checked yet. Well, the brake pad warning light just came on. So, knowing relatively little about this subject, I have a few questions:
1. Do I need to take it to the dealership to get the "BMW" brake pads as recommended by the manual or can I go to a competent mechanic and just have them done.
2. Is there anyone who can recommend a competent BMW mechanic in Jax FL?
Thanks!
