F90 M5 or wait for the 2024 M5

Hello guys, i've been in the market for an M5 now and i don't know rather if i should wait for the new body M5 or go with the current f90, there is a engine difference but also a big weight difference my guess is the new M5 is going to weigh close to 5k pounds, but what's holding me back is the idrive8 what do u guys think and what would you guys do ? wait for the new M5 or buy a current f90 ? thanks

From what others have said on here the G90 M5 will be a 2025 MY and therefore you would probably need to wait for 2 years from now to actually receive one (if you get lucky and get one of the first few). I was in the same dilemma and had a G80 M3c and wanted the M5 and after thinking about waiting it out with the G80 for the G90 I told myself I did not want to wait another 2 years and have the first iteration of it.

My opinion would be get an LCI F90 now as the LCI is one of the most beautiful modern day BMW's ever made in my opinion and maybe wait for the LCI G90 which will most likely resolve any issues the G90 might have (if any being that it is a new drivetrain) or just trade in the F90 for a G90 if you love it enough once it is released.

I made my decision and traded my G80 for the F90 and if I had to redo it I would do it twice as fast. That being said Im not sure if you are trading yours in or just adding to your stable but this is just my personal opinion and what my experience was.

The F90 is the best daily I have driven point blank- I enjoy getting in it every single time.

Goodluck with your search and decision and definitely let us know what you decide.

It will be for 2025 not 2024. Other than that, everything right now is speculative except that it will have the S68 and 700hp. Weight will obviously be more but the hope is that bmw will offset that with a better chassis and rear wheel steering, etc. BMW will be down massively on hp compared to the gt63s e performance at 831hp but I do think they are always aware of the competition and will try to react accordingly.

G90 start of production is 7/24 which I believe will actually be a '25 model.

Are you going to race the car on a track? If not, weight becomes less of a factor. I'm pretty confident BMW will not release this car with less performance than the current F90. It's already been announced that the car will debut with 700HP, and you can bet the comp (or red or whatever they call it) will have more than that.

Yes, it really stinks that every year cars get heavier. I'm sure it has nothing to do with our insatiable desire to go a little faster, stop a little shorter all while being coddled with the latest technology and luxury appointments.

I'm hoping iD8 will be better integrated into the dash as compared to what they did in the G80. Was just looking at an X7 the other night and ID8 is ok in that model for me. Who knows, by 24 we might be already looking at ID9.

If you want the last great pure ICE car - get one now, they're not going to be around much longer. Heck, lease for 3 years that puts you end of calendar year 25 which should be around the time they're introducing the "competition" or whatever they call it.

So I was in the same boat but I ended up just taking the G80 and not listening to my gut on going for the F90. Wrong decision. Thankfully I wasn't upside down because of the market when I traded the G80 in.

Needless to say that if you have any doubt right now and you are anything like me you will feel a little regret every time you see an F90 which I did many times.

Glad I could help and I hope you do what's best for you. Either way both cars are incredible in their own right - take into consideration what you value most.

I have owned 3 M5's and a hard rule for me is to never buy the first model year of one. Go ahead a get a 2023 M5, you will be very happy!

+1 on this — both regarding the looks (I expressed the exact same sentiment on here a few days ago), and with taking the course of action described.

I was in the same situation. I decided to order a 2023 M5 since nobody has any idea on not only when the next model will be available, but also what kind of hybrid it will be. I would not want to own a first year of a brand new engine type from BMW. The last year of the F90 will be very valuable I believe, because it will be the last true V8 M5.

If you base buying a car on the future models and the tech/ engine specs of the newer model - there is no point in buying a car at all.

New models will always out do out going models, duh.

The LCI, as mentioned above is by far the most perfected form of the F90 chassis. I would buy one of these and ride it out. We still have at least 2 laps around the sun until we see the G9x platform on the internet, much less on the roads

Agreed, however, I think it'll be the F90 in general - at least that's what we hope for

+1 to everyone who recommended you get the 23 F90. I recently picked mine up and could not be happier. Will be eyeing a mid cycle refresh for the next gen model.

Just picked up mine at performance center on Tuesday (highly recommend if you can) you will not be disappointed. Wife thinks I'm nuts because I go start it 3x a day just to hear it.

Side note and perhaps not directly applicable but ran into a guy on way home from performance center who had an i8 and his front electric motor went out and it was $18,000.

My neighbor's brother had his battery go out of warranty on his tesla and it was $28k which he refuses to pay so he charges it for 8hrs every day to drive 20 miles to work and back.

I'm not to enthusiastic about the whole hybrid thing.

So the 24 model will be a F90 as well?

2023 should be the last MY for F90 M5. Next gen M5 will be MY 2025. No MY 2024 M5's.
