No spare tire?

OK, feel a bit dumb asking but. . .

Unless I’m missing something, my 21m5c I just got doesn’t seem to have storage for one. Do any models? What do you do for flat??

Correct, the car does not come with a spare tire. If you have a flat I guess they figure you would call for service. Maybe most people do not change their own tires anyway. I have to admit it is not very often, I mean once over many years, I have had to change a tire while away from home. A spare tire kit is available for purchase, but it would just be stored in the trunk.

There is a slime kit in the car. G30 raise the trunk floor and have an AGM battery rather than lithium and fit a donut spare. Have not read of any M5 owners converting but some buy a 19” donut spare and put it in the trunk. A couple of companies sell “kits” with the spare, Jack, bag, etc. You can google for them.

Many "standard" BMWs come with run flats as standard equipment from the factory, however M cars do not by default.

Check out my thread below. Sorry it's long and includes a bunch of other stuff, but it also includes a lot of useful info for the spare tire solution from Modern Spare.

First Road Trip/Roof Rails/Cargo Box/Spare Tire https://f90.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh....php?t=1956151

I have yet to use it. I've been fortunate enough that the three tire issues issues I had in the last year or so all occurred no more than 2 miles from the dealership. I used Fix a Flat and my air compressor to get me to the dealership. Was fortunate enough to not even need a tow. Tires were then patched at the dealership while new ones came in. A word of advice though, shop techs HATE the slime as they clean it out before patching the tire. If you've used a lot because you have a bad (i.e., heavily leaking) flat, you'll need a majority of the can. It takes about an hour to clean out one can worth of slime, and dealerships will often try to charge for one of of labor to do so.

Depends on how far you are away from home or an open tire shop with a suitable tire in stock.

When I go on road trips I put my spare and a tire plug kit in my trunk. I've got the spare strapped so it doesn't budge at all.

I live in a less populous area, so the 275/285 R20s are not typically in-stock, even at my dealer. Road trips are even worse. So keep the spare (got a kit from modern spare) and plug kit as a backup.

Thanks for the info everyone! Refusing of course to open the owner’s manual, I spent the better part of 15 minutes trying to pry the cargo floor up with my fingers and crawling underneath to figure out what was going on here!

Funny, I myself changed my last flat over 20 years ago! Since then:
2021: Someone plowed into my ZR2 and destroyed front tire. I TRIED to change it only to realize the bottle Jack was no match for the lift and oversized tires I had since installed! Then I was driving a rental car that went flat on interstate and I pulled off the next exit and there was a tire shop literally right in sight!

Also, somewhat related question: having just bought used, do I still get the roadside assistance?

Just google modern spare and you'll find their website.

You should, as a general matter, get the remaining term of road side assistance based on the initial in service date of the car.

BMW does make a spare tire kit for the 5 series.

I had this kit in myM550i. I transferred it over to my M5. They are very hard to find.

Before and after pics.

I have seen the G30 trunk before but don’t really want to give up trunk height. I may reconsider. Could probably salvage all this out of a G30. I assume the lithium battery has to be moved?

I’d think the battery move would be very difficult. The perspective in the photo is tough to determine. I wonder how far above the top of the raised side of the trunk floor the spare tire module is? The metal floor that surrounds the battery under the lift off cover is approximately 3 3/4” down from the lowest edge of the raised side, and it gets deeper as you move forward. Probably rubber insulation underneath the tire module rests directly on the metal floor.

I will try to take some pics tomorrow, but everything fits over the battery.

I will also look for the part numbers and snap pics of them. Several pieces.

I like the space savings we get with the Modern Spare tire and wheel, but I wonder if the required spacer affects the engagement of the lug bolt. Have you mounted the Modern Spare to see the fit? How much of the stock lug bolt engages the threads in the hub? When you put the stock lug bolt through the Modern Spare and spacer, what is the length of the exposed bolt?

EDIT: I asked this question before looking closely at the supplied spacer from Modern Spare. I feel stupid after asking it! Just so no one reading my question is misled, the spacer doesn’t affect lug bolt engagement at all. Your stock lug bolts attach the spacer to the hub, then the threaded studs on the spacer are used to mount the Modern Spare wheel. They supply lug nuts for doing that.

I snapped some pics of the spare tire kit being taken out so you can see what all is involved and how much it increases in height. I also tried to take pics of all the tags.

Hope this helps
