Need help with infamous random limp mode on early f30 335i

Hello forum members,
I am having a 12 335i F30 sports line w 84K miles. Engine is completely stock
While I was driving on the street, the car fall into the limp mode with less than 160F oil temp and completely no power at over 3k rpm.
When I resteart the engine, the limp mode is gone but CEL was on. On the first time I restart the engine, the idling rpm was unstable, but after second restart, everything is back to normal.
Scan the obd II and get the code of 1D2008, thermal stuck open.
I know my thermal stuck open for a while and normally it shouldn't cause limp mode because that will give the car lower oil temp.

I am having the exact same issue as this post, however, I bought my car as CPO back in 2015 with 33k miles and never had issue until recent. But these early n55 owners are having problem in the early ownership many years ago and getting the different code of 1A2008.

Based on the post, the solution needs to upgrade the DME software and my car is out of the warranty and BMW did recall this issue. Is there anyway to resolve this issue but not necessary going to dealership? Just wandering what are the avaliable options?

Hey I had the same problem as you and as documented in the thread you found. I took mine to a local independent shop and had them flash an update as a first attempt at corrective action. Luckily, that worked for me. I did the flash first because I was going in for some other work and it was easy to just have done. I also thought that seemed like a logical first step - others may disagree.

Like the thread lays out, 1 (or more in some cases) of those corrective actions should get it fixed. Hopefully its not that whole fan unit though - they are pretty expensive.

Hope you find which one works for you quickly and easily.

in my understanding, bm3 is to flash the ECU program. Is that gonna completely fix the problem?

Did you went to a indy shop to flash the ECU? How much money did they charge you?
