Help! Debit Card Theft
Took my wife to the amusement park today and my debit card got stolen, not sure if it fell out of my pocket or lifted when I was in line. Called the bank immediately after I noticed it was missing, they said no pending purchases and said they shut the card down. This was 13mins before they closed.
Now tonight the thing is on fire it's being used so much. Called every number my bank says to call in case it's stolen and none can find my account or say they don't deal with my bank any longer. (only has 5 branches) I called one store they used the card at 3 times and they confirmed the use and said they could get me cctv footage. Called the police dept local to them (over and hr away) and they said nothing they can do since it wasn't stolen in their city. So my card is out being passed around and there isn't a thing I can do. I drained the rest of the bank account but soon it will switch to over draft (which I never wanted). I've been dealing with them for 20 years but I'm ready to go in and drain my accounts tomorrow. Tired of being with a small bank that is in the dark ages. The police even said can't you just turn the card off in the app. App what app. Not sure what else to do, ideas? Hope the bank will make it right? |

Sorry to hear this. I know this is too late, but maybe this advice will help others....
Never, NEVER use your debit card. ALWAYS use your credit card for purchases. If its lost, stolen, whatever, and fraudulent charges are incurred - a simple call and you're off the hook. However, with a debit card, - the money is immediately drained from your checking account and now it may take weeks to get restitution. Again, hope you find a solution to this issue quickly Our03z4 |

Thanks friend! Luckily we keep sub $1k in that account for this very reason. We keep the rest in savings that has no card linked and is never used for anything else other than transfers. They are hitting up a bar right now, called the place and they are waiting for my card to be used again...if they are still there. Issue is I'm not sure how much of a delay it has before it shows up as pending. |

Would be nice if my bank was that with the times. Like I said time to go with one of the big boys after this. Their bare bones app barely works, but they did just build a massive new office building lol.

Dafuq? A CRIME was committed with your card in THEIR city, what difference does it make where the card disappeared? That can't possibly be right. Unless maybe you live in LA, where the DA just lets everyone walk anyways.

I was surprised as well. Said I have to call where it was taken then they'll call their detectives and then they'll start to figure it out. Crazy. I literally had evidence from one of the stores ready for them and they didn't care.

Our bank handles situations like this much differently. Card should have been terminated new card in mail, money all refunded, sign sealed delivered. Change banks.

I signed an affidavit saying I didn't authorize the charges, they canceled the card, sent me a new one and I had my money back in less 5 business days. |

Was always told never leave any money in your debit account than you can afford to loose. Short end of story I use my for going out like that but only put in X dollar amount that I plan to spend that way if something was to happen I would not need to wait 7-10 business days for a new CC.
My gal's son who lives with me "long story" had his debit account hacked and they withdrew all his money. I had told him numerous times he should have main account where his money is deposited and then transfer money accordingly. didn't listen....lost 4K because it's a debit card and some banks will reimburse while other tell you they don't and his bank does not. Has he set up another account? No but I could careless at this point. |

Any issue I ever had, they sent me an affidavit but immediately cancelled the card and sent me a new one and the money was back in the account right after they questioned me.

Yeah you gotta switch to one of the big boys. Pretty much with any of them you can lock your accounts through the app. That not even counting all the other features like depositing checks on the app etc.

I've had Bank of America since 2005 and never had a bad experience. You should consider them. Small enough to be a local bank but large enough to handle stuff like this appropriately

Thankfully most banks will treat it like a cc and refund the money but like said use CC exclusively, considerably more robust protection. |

Debt cards have different "rules" than credit cards. Usually, when the debit card is used, the money is gone forever. A CC on the other hand, is protected from fraudulent purchases. The return of the OP's money is a testament to his bank.

And purchase protection on some cards. I use my AMEX exclusively for high dollar electronic and jewelry purchases. My AMEX card doubles the manufacturer's warranty up to one year of additional coverage and provides 90 days of lost/stolen/accidental damage coverage. I've used this perk twice. Once for a printer repair that AMEX paid the full $900 and the other was for an item I accidentally dropped that was not repairable. They reimbursed me $120 for that.

Found out this morning that the guy didn't cancel the card. They got it closed now and new one on the way. They will also be returning the money to me. I've dealt with the person who is now the VP of the bank for 20 yrs, I'll be talking with her to see if any issues will be changing. They were the only bank that let me have a checking account at 15 and also let me get a home loan at 19 with basically no credit and being self employed. It will be sad to leave since I know most people and a simple phone call can get most anything done. Unfortunately a bad apple can ruin the relationship. I actually opened a M1 account a few months ago and I'm thinking I may just go full out with them. Excellent cash back, great mutual funds, super easy to use and I can turn the cards off instantly. Hard to go full digital though. |

That's great they're making things right. I had a bank account with M&T Bank. My account was started almost 30 years ago. It went through two different bank acquisitions where it ultimately became an M&T account. With that long history, they chose to not keep me happy over a $15 cashier's check charge. So I left them and went to PNC.
