Full Testing JB3 1.2 beta maps -- with Video

I have finished enough thorough testing of the JB3 1.2 that I feel I can write an informative review. PLEASE DO NOT COMPARE THIS TO ANY OTHER TUNE OR BASH HERE.

My Car

First, I want to touch on my car. I am pre-29.2 and the only other performance mods I have are DCIs. I run 93 octance fuel. I do have a boost gauge and spent a lot of time monitoring it for the review.

What did I test?

For those that don't know the new JB3 1.2 has a lot of new items. There are a lot more maps to choose from. They are the following:

User Maps:

0 Stock/Valet
1 Low Boost
2 High altitude 1.1 -- suggested for 4500' or higher
3 1.1 and the default map
4 1.1 w/ lagvix 2.0
5 Hotter 1.1 -- Higher than 93 octance or downpipes/intake suggested
6 Hotter 1.1 w/ lagfix 2.0
7 Race Gas Map -- 100 octane plus downpipes and intake suggested

There are 7 more diagnostic maps, but I have stuck with the user maps. I have not had the opportunity to splash and race fuel in yet either, so I cannot speak to that.

Conditions

I drove a lot of conditions from temperatures in the teens to the 60s.

Results

When I set out to test this, I spent a lot of time making sure that I could document at least 4 runs for the following:

1,800 rpms - 3000 rpms (for lagfix testing)
1,800 rpms - 4000 rpms
Full redline runs.

The 1.1 or default map

1.8k - 3k rpm, this consistently pulled 9.5 - 10 psi every single run

1.8k - 4k rpm pulled consistently 11.5 - 12.0 psi.

To redline, the 1.1 map consistently pulled 12.5 psi every single run.

New 1.2 maps

1.8k - 3k rpms, this map consistently pulled 10 psi. Identical to 1.1

1.8k - 4k rpms, this map consistently pulled 12-12.5 psi. This is a slight rise in boost over the 1.1 maps.

To redlne, the 1.2 pulled 13.5 - 14.5 psi depending on the temperature. This is a 1-2 psi increase over the 1.1 maps.

Conclusions

This is probably the most important part. First I want to touch on the lag fix maps. I am a pre-29.2 car, so lag was never something I noticed. With that said, the lag fix maps are definitely a bit more jumpy when you hit the gas. I suspect on a post 29.2 car, this will really pop off the pavement. The wastegate duty cycle has been adjusted and now they are closed at the lower rpms. For post 29.2 this means you car should build boost as fast as any pre-29.2 car does.

Now the over all feel. The 1.2 is no doubt a much stronger pulling map. I can feel a substantial pull difference over 4k rpms. It absolutely jumps and pulls like a monster right through redline. I am not on stock run flats and I can spin out first all day long. I can spin out second every time from a hard shift from first. A lot has been made in recent reviews that someone who changed from JB3 and one of the things that he noticed was the traction control light came on with his new tune. Well here is a video to show this is no different than the JB3:




Clearly you can see this is with no shift to second and just flooring the car. The traction control is fighting from 3k until I let off for traction. The second half of the video is slow motion of the beginning. This is not doing that on stock runflats, but a big non-runflat tire. That is a LOT of power.

The new 1.2 adds more power from about 3k rpms up. The car is clearly a hand full to drive. It pulls and pulls consistently to redline on every single run. I wished for a little more torque after the 1.1 maps were released, and that has now been satisfied. I just cannot imagine a better tune for this car and the bang for buck is simply un-matched.

Finally Map Switching

I have a Rix gauge and map switching was never really an issue for me, but the range of options are now huge with JB3 1.2. This is the release that comes with the gas pedal map switching. It is intuitive and simple. One press of the gas for 4 seconds gets the JB3 listening. Subsequent presses of the gas put it in the map you want. Map 3, 3 presses of the gas, etc. Start the car and the map is locked. For someone like me, with the Rix map switcher, the race gas is locked in at bc.1, the JB3 map switching is locked in at bc.2, and the default 1.1 map is locked in at bc.3. You have everything you want at the touch of the finger or gas pedal. It is a beautiful addition.

I would recommend anyone who is thinking of doing any map switching to get a boost gauge. You really need to know what boost you are running so you don't have any mistakes. Rix gauge is fantastic and I know JB has a diagnostic tool/map switcher/boost gauge coming out soon too. Either are a necessity.

To me, the 1.2 hotter maps are the right maps. I am not sure there is anything better JB can do from a tuning standpoint. The car is now perfect.

I have one here we have to put on our shop car. I want to get some before and after dyno testing between the 1.1 and 1.2 beta maps. seems like its a nice pick up based on your boost logs.

Eric, I will continue to log boost. I will put it back on the dyno once I pick up some MS109 to try to race maps, but the pump numbers pull really hard. The car is really a handfull to drive in the lower gears.

I am not. I run 93 on both map 5 and 6. Those are the hotter 1.1 and hotter 1.1 with lag fix. fl335, they pull really hard.

Might be a dumb question, but how much is the upgrade? I assume it is a different chip that goes in the JB3 module?

I got my JB3 in the very first batch--not even sure what map I am running--I thought it was referred to as the "high boost" map at the time.

Looks cool and great review.

i think the upgrade is just a chip for like 5 bucks or free if you bought the jb3 within 90 days? correct me if im wrong.

jb3 v1.2 the default map is still the 1.1 high boost map i think, but you can change it to the hotter maps via pedal/boost gauge.

You can. I ran it on 91 octane with no codes. But as Terry explained me today, if you are on 93 oct or lower with no other mods, you might be better of with map 3 and 4 and get more power than with hotter maps.

That is what I run. I am definitely faster on the 1.1 Hotter than the standard 1.1. I would try it. That is the beauty of the throttle map switching.

I believe you are correct for the upgrade. You know that is one of the things about BMS... they have proven that they will not charge basically anything for upgrades. From a buyer's standpoint, that is really a generous thing to do.
