iDrive always gives me a longer way to take the route

i was just driving to someones house and put in there address and i noticed that iDrive didnt take me there directly it took me to a way longer route..when i was getting close i started recognizing some streets and was like wtf this is so close to my house and all the idrive did was make me go all the way around. anyone else experience this? im just surprised..now im thinking of all those times i put an address in the idrive and how much quicker i couldve gotten there. so does anyone know how i can configure it or whatever to make it get to my destination quicker? thanks alot n sorry if this is a repost

There should be a function in the Nav which gives you the short route...look at the Nav manual

What preferences do you have the satnav set to in terms of routing?

There are, I believe, three possibilities: fastest, shortest, and highway only (or three closely approximating what I just wrote).

You select them in the satnav main menu or from the route pref. icon to the left of main window.

I have noticed this as well as I drive to a different race almost every weekend in several different states. Yes, I've tried the different routing methods (newer, '09 version BTW). Also, not new to this with a Garmin portable, previous ones in Honda, Infinit, Mercedes and current Audi as well. Not sure why it chooses certain routes.

I figure she just can feel my love for the drive and wants me to drive just a little bit more Man I love that heated steering wheel!

Mine makes some silly routing choices sometimes too. I've used it to map out drives I've made many times and I know it isn't choosing the "fastest" route. My TomTom seems to make much better decisions.

Ehhh... it still gets me where I need to go and I didn't really buy it for the gizmos anyway.

It is mostly due to the map and how certain roads are classified. This can change from one map version to the next. For instance some areas seem to be marked such that it avoids going through them unless there is no other choice (destination is within the 'restricted' area).
For instance I suspect (at least here in Europe) that whole city centers are classified as 'restricted' areas and as such it will try to guide you around the city instead of through it.

And as others have noted it depends on if you selected Fastest Route, Shortest Route or to avoid highways.

Navi has a mind of its own, but I dont have too much trouble provided there are no traffic issues.

When there is traffic, then it is constantly finding new routes and it usually finds a slower route, which I end up having to guess and take my own chances. Most of this problem I think is because it thinks that the smaller roads with no traffic-speed sensors have no traffic. However, this still doesn't explain all of the poor routing.

Indeed it does not know about traffic on the majority of roads because the data it receives only typically cover the main highways, so it will happily re-route you to a secondary road backed up for miles and traffic lights at every crossing.

Another thing is that it does not seem to take traffic on other routes into consideration when recalculating your route, so the moment it is done and you approved of the new route it will again warn you of traffic problems on the new route, which might actually be worse then the old route.

But the other problems, as I already commented in a prior post are due I think to the map material itself

Its calculations are faulty even accounting for the lack of data it has on side streets.

I find that it often reroutes me to go on a side street that has ~ 3 to 4x the miles to the destination, when even if I could go the max speed on the side street, it would be slower than the stop-go-traffic (that the NAVI acknowledges is going at a slow pace of a 2 of those black arrows).

I have the same annoyance. I've set mine to both shortest and fastest and it still doesn't take me the way I know is faster. Very annoying!
