N55 Doubts due to B58- 5 years ownership :-)
Hey Everyone,
I hope all is well. I have had my N55 2015 rwd for about 5 years and i'm starting to have legitimate doubts on the long term. I've done great mods (Msport bumper package conversation plus splitters, M LSD, BM3 Stage 1, M performance Exhaust, M performance interior upgrades, MPS4S upgrades and so on) I'm about 55k mile and wondering the long game here. Do we see more expansions on the horizon due to the M2 or is the B58 going to crush the N55 into non existence... Do we bail now or should we hang on? I know a bunch of stuff would transfer to an LCI F30 but is it worth the jump? Not trying to win Race Wars here but just trying to understand the groups current feelings. Thanks! Tom J

1. I'm confused because I don't understand what exactly you are asking. Are you asking about aftermarket support? Long term reliability? Do you want to buy a new car?
B. Why are you asking us? III. What?

N55 EWG is amazing. Massive selection of performance and styling mods. Cannot ask for more. I am at 115000km, bought the car at 37000km, used it for fun first with JB4, then ESS Tuning flash and power box, then Bootmod3 and now with MHD custom tune. First Pure Stage1 then Stage2 mixed with WMI. Done in excess of 1000 logged WOT pulls and compression is still great. What more to ask for?!

If you are going to the B58 and slap on a tune and mods to push 400's then yes the upside for the B58 is higher. Otherwise, I personally would not and rather go S58 and get an M-car you have a real upgrade over the N55 there.

The B58 is nicer in the sense that making big power for less investment is easier. However, if you already own an N55, you are going to spend WAY more money selling your car, buying another one (especially right now with the market at its highest) and then modding it. It makes much more sense to keep your car.
If you want more power, buying a bigger turbo, hpfp and custom tune will probably still end up cheaper than buying another car with a B58. |

Yeah this thread wasn't about bashing the N55 just trying to get everyone's take on the current status of it. Seems everyone only talks B58 and how it will be a classic on YouTube and other forums. Just don't want to miss the parade before the world is all game on for EV.
Just trying to start some conversation. If you want me to delete this thread just let me know. Cheers!

There's still an active aftermarket scene for the m20b25 in my 1989 325i. Back in the day, everyone wanted to pull their m20s and swap in m5x or s5x engines because they made more power and had more mods available.
A more recent example is that new products are still coming out for n54 cars. I am 100% certain that people will be building n55 engines for decades and there will be an aftermarket scene to support it. |

N55 is just as solid as B58 when stock. If you want to make a lot of power then you probably need to upgrade. Personally I'll stick with my 435i for a long long time because I'm keeping it stock power-wise.

N55 will continue to have support and a solid audience for years to come, the price on N55 is good for people to hop on the brand/platform with decent output and plethora of aftermarket parts, it's a still good bang for your buck, like others are saying if you already have a modded N55 and are trying to upgrade, I'd save a little more and get an M instead, whether a used F8X or a new G8X that upgrade will farther exceed your expectations than a B58, no hate on that platform either just my 2 cents

Honestly you can't really ask for more
N55 is a beast Sure b58 makes more stock turbo power, both engines can handle relatively the same power levels given healthy engine and maintenance. Plenty of 600hp n55 cars have held up well on stock internals Anything beyond that for both engines is just luck on longevity and should be built imo, plus, if we made too much more power on stock turbo we would be slipping trans just like f chassis b58 cars do when pushed |

A part of me wishes I waited another year and saved more and got a 440i instead of a 435i but honestly im not looking for huge power numbers, just something that feels strong and sounds good and the n55 does that for me. i've been tuned since 55k miles im now at 128k miles and still going strong no problems will be holding onto for a while my 2 cents

I chose a loaded f36 n55 over a base msport f30 b58, and came from an FBO e90 n54.
Love the n55 so far it's been great! Mppk feels very nice and power is sufficient enough for me. I've put on about 25,xxx km in 5 months. No funky sound, rattles, drivetrain malfunction 🤞 I was running into issues every 10-15k on the fbo n54. I'm pretty done with trying to go fast, I spent the money on visuals this time around. I found that I overall enjoy the car much more now. I'd keep the n55, even the n20 is getting lots of aftermarket love and overall seems like the F3x chassis will still be relevant for time to come

I own two N55's both with over 130,000 miles. My 335i is awesome, reliable, quick, and shockingly efficient. With a 2012 build date and a tune since 10,000 miles my 335i MT has been shockingly reliable. Hell, I'm still on the stock clutch!
Is there a reason to jump ship? Not really. My 335i is an M-Sport, so the additional cooling has helped a ton. Yet, its not an M3. The only real reason to jump ship in my eyes is if you want a better track car. At that point I makes much more sense to get a real M car with an LSD, better suspension, and better cooling. I've tracked my 335i M-Sport for many years and its done well. However, the lack of the e-diff and front camber really hurts the car from a track perspective. Short of tracking the car my N55 335i has been a phenomenal daily driver. With its tune (just a JB4 on map 2) its a sleeper that smokes more cars than it should. After market support is still there, its easy to work on, and it road trips well. With now being the worst time to buy a car, I'd stick with ol'e reliable. |

As much as I loved the F30 N55 I bit the bullet and sold the car for almost as much as I paid 5 years ago.... I was then able to pick up a used 2020 M340i fully loaded RWD which is the best here in Florida. Loved the N55 but i'm happy I had the chance to move on. See ya on G20.post
