Driving Playlist Must Haves

When taking a trip of at least an hour, there are certain songs/bands that I tend to include on playlists every time. Here’s my Top 5, as well as some honorable mentions that come up in Most Played, etc…what are yours??

1. “Rime of the Ancient Mariner” - Iron Maiden
2. “Arriving Somewhere But Not Here” - Porcupine Tree
3. “Coming Back To Life” - Pink Floyd
4. “From The Right Angle” - Dawes
5. “Mange” - Deer Tick

Also: “How Could You Want Him (When You Know You Could Have Me?)” - Spin Doctors, Tranceport Album by Oakenfold, “Soil’s Song” - Katatonia, “Lateralus” - Tool, “Nobody Left To Run With” - Allman Brothers, “Nightmare” - Mercyful Fate, “Visions of Mortality” - Celtic Frost, “Moth” - Audioslave, “Storm” - Fleetwood Mac, “Hey, Ma” - Bon Iver, “Hey Jude(Wilson Pickett version with D. Allman) and “The Necromancer” - Rush

Good version, but yes, Deep Purple… the original.

Red Barchetta is one of the greatest Rock tunes ever IMO. It usually does end up on my playlists, even though I've listened probably 4000 times already lol

In the '90s I used to blast through the Santa Cruz Mountains in my little red 2-liter Scirocco 16V with Red Barchetta turned up to 11 as I carved corner after corner. Good times. Never gets old, 40 years later..

For me it’s Southern rock.
Lynyrd Skynyrd: One More From the Road, the whole album.
Allman Brothers, Best of.

But then I have no problems driving 1000 miles in a day, so classic vinyl on satellite radio works.

On this week’s drive I listened to all 9 Beethoven symphonies, and still had several hours (no music, Zen time).

On the return drive I’ll probably play an assortment of Jazz since I’m in that mood. Dizzy, Miles, Trane, Hawkins - that crowd and era.

Sometimes I’ll listen to business news (Sat radio), or farm reports and other local stuff (AM), surf the FM stations as I pass along, etc.

Next trip I’ll probably play opera: Carmen, La Boheme, Madame Butterfly, Tosca are my car favorites.

And of course there is always Bohemian Rhapsody.
