M3 Base 6MT RWD
Curious on peoples experience with having a 6mt rwd in the North east climate. How is the car on snow/rain? From my experience awd cars aren't that much better in rain or snow, I always thought the winter tires made all the difference, and even then better to just stay home in snow. But can anybody with a m3 6mt rwd verify that?

If you plan on driving the car in colder temps you will definitely wanna change the tires to atleast an all season tire. The car comes on summers and are horrible under 50degrees. Im in NJ but my car is away for most of the winter. Just pulled it out for some cars and coffees the last couple weekends. Awd cars are much better in the snow. With a set of snows theyre awesome in snow.

I used my 6MT all winter with winter tires, in the snow. No issues. I will quietly admit that the traction control is remarkable. I had very much trouble trying to kick the car out to lose traction on purpose while the traction control was still on.

I was up early this morning and it was 27 degrees in NYC. I just switched up to summer tires and kind of forgot that my winters were not on. I put my foot down and it lit up the rear but the TC kicked in very quickly and stopped me from making a fool of myself.
I have RWD Comp that never missed a beat all winter with the right tires If you really want a 6MT go for it! Just budget on winter tires |

Agree. Have 6MT also. Got caught out in an unforecasted snow storm on the original performance tires back in November. ZERO traction and it was a white-knuckle ride home and not in a good way. Barely made it up the slightest of incline into my neighborhood. Found and bought the last set of the 829 package in Great Lakes region the next day. Since then absolutely no issues.

I've run them to 165 MPH; Great off the dig too. I'd say tight corners pushing really hard you feel the weakness; not as sharp and precise. Braking great. For how you should drive on public roads I rate them a 10. If you like that next level of précis handling and high level of grip it will fall to about 75% of what you would expect from a pure summer tire. Read the reviews on tirerack… The DWS 06 has over 1,000,000 miles of tested review miles no other HP All season is close. It's not rated number 1 because they have way more reviews. Other tires have a smaller sample pool of data. Good luck! |

While I would love to be pushing the car to the limit, the reality is most of my driving is relatively tame, especially when the kids are in the car so I think they would suit my driving fine. I should get rid of the winters and get a dedicated track set and do a couple of track days. I used to do atleast a dozen of them a year but haven't been in a long time |

IMHO, this would be acceptable... on a Camry. You're paying a lot of money for a sports car that was designed to offer maximum performance and handling and braking and acceleration on summer (performance) tires. Dumbing them down to all-seasons buys some flexibility, of course, at the expense of dulling the responses. They're a jack-of-all-trades, master of none. If you're going to be driving in winter weather, then winter tires are the best choice. For those considering this: Costco offers a good selection of tires and cheap rates to swap them back and forth. Or you can get winters mounted on separate wheels (Tire Rack) and easily do the swap yourself. My two cents.

I'm the kind of person who used to go through 5 sets of track tires in a year so I know exactly the difference in performance The reality of the situation is that 95% of the time in driving in traffic in Manhattan with a 5 week old and an 18 month old in the back so it's just not applicable That's why I said I think I would be better served with a set of all Seasons plus a set of track tires rather than winter tires |

Yeah, in that case a Camry might make more sense for you in other respects

I was thinking about the X5M or RS6 as a next move but TBH the new Range Rover looks hard to beat for ferrying the family around. It's like a luxury mattress on wheels which would not be a good thing normally but needs change |

AWD + winter tires are best, but this car in the snow with good winter tires does amazingly well. The LSD and great traction control systems make a difference. A bit slow off the line but once I get traction I am on the gas and letting the car do the rest :-).

I'm a Jersey guy with 6MT G80, and I've been running Vredestein all-seasons since shortly after I picked the car up. I don't drive it in snow, but these tires are a huge improvement over the summer Michelins during cold weather. I've run the DWS on my E46, and it's a solid choice, too. I really like the Vredestein - quiet, smooth, and good grip in cold weather. I went with a square 19" setup - I figured the 30 series rear tires wouldn't play well with NJ potholes. I'll put them back on the car in a few weeks, once I see most of the potholes have been filled.
