in case of an emergency...

Suppose you have an E90 325 with the staggered SP 17x8 +34 offset (F) and 17X8.5 +37 offset (R) wheels with the corresponding 225/45 (F) and 255/40 (R) tires. Suppose you're also caught off guard on a mountain pass or early storm with this setup and ice has formed around you. The manual states you should definitely not put chains on the rear with the 255 tires, although it's ok to do so on the 225/45R17. I suppose the extra 3 cm of tire width together with a similar increase due to the chains would rip into the fender or strut. Assuming you actually have chains to fit the 225 setup and the ability to jack up the car, would you be able to get out of a bind by moving the 255’s to the front and the 225’s to the rear and install the chains? Or would you just end up moving the problem to the front? Are the 8.5” +37mm simply a no-go on the front due to clearance and you’re better off trying to figure how to weather outthe storm?

I seem to remember from somewhere that you can't use snowchain on ANY of the 17" or 18" wheels!

Might be wrong...

Not quite. Pg 179 of the manual states that you cannot use snowchains on any 255 width tires, be it 17," 18," or 19" wheels.
On page 9 of the accessories brochure, it lists snow chains that fit 225/45R17:225/50R16.

Unhappy Snow chains a NO go --

Tried fitting a 2002 330i w sport suspension and 245x40/17 tires for a client in early 05. NO success tire's inner sidewall almost touching forward strut-stabilizer by itself -- NO clearance for ANY snowtraction at all

Fender clearance wouldn't have been a problem [ once installed ] BUT -- jack would have had to have been employed to raise body from tire to allow access to install IF -- there had been room to strut-stabilizer -- MAYBEE -- a SpikesSpider would work
