Are dinian springs the way to go?

Ok, i guess im just really undecided about lowering the M3. I had basically decided to go with the eibachs. But I heard u can have problems with EDC just like a recent poster posted problems with the H&R's and edc malfunction. So I called Dinan, and the technician I was speaking to really gave me some good info, who even someone like me who knows nothing about suspension understood. I know theres been a lot of talk about riding on the bump stops when dropping the car with the H&R's. and i must say, it really sounds like this is so, therefore ur shocks are useless. Can this be why the edc problems are occurring? Also, it seems the problems dont happen right away. I asked if they had any pics of their springs on a car and he said he does. They sold around 20+ sets and will send me pics as soon as he gets some next week. But I think i will go with this setup and probably have a 35 prifile tire on the 20" wheel. This makes sense to me. Probably go with 285/35/20 and 255/35/20 nittos since they have a shorter side wall. I dont think there will be rubbing being that the drop is .5" but the tire might fill in the rest pretty well, plus the ride should be much better.

Any thoughts?

Garage List
At $800+ for Dinian, I would put Eibachs (.8 & .6 drop) on at $270 as the have the next best drop to dinian.

Yes, but someone on this boeard has had the edc problem that a recent poster just posted with his H&R's. Last thing I want is problems with my edc. Plus, all the talk about driving on the bump stops really does make sense. Dinan has a solution to that. I know u pay more but..... Mayb its worth it.

I don't think you drive on the bump stops with Eibach, or do you? I know you do with H&R.

What dinan explained to me, and this may not be the exact wording, was that with the stock setup there is .5" of travel between the bump stop and spring, therefore dropping it anything more then .5" an inch would mean ur on the bump stop. If this is worded wrong someone please fill in, but I think its right. What they did was change the bump stops so u get full use of shock and springs only yielding a smaller drop. But the handling is much better.

There has been EDC problems posted in this same forum without any aftermarket springs installed since the M3 introduction 7-8 months ago so right now one particular example cannot be quickly assumed as a sign of a general negative pattern about lowering springs and EDC.

We just do not have enough information about the real culprit of that particular EDC failure. It could have been an EDC failure exclusive from the H&R's, could have been an installation problem (the EDC connector plugs were not pushed in enough/firmly since the very beginning and months of vibration took its toll) or in fact the H&R springs messed up the shocks.

I've had H&R sport on my M for about 3400 miles with no problems. The ride is good.

Makes lots of sense. Wish we had more info on the problems

To be honest, if you like Dinan's drop, and if an extra $600 isn't a problem, just go for Dinan, because it comes with warranty for a peace of mind.

If you want the look of a bigger drop, there are plenty of other choices, but you have to take the risk.

Also, based on input from Orb, the front springs have a rate of 160 lb/in (effective rear spring rate is a little higher), which means if you have four 160 lb adults in your car, you would be riding 0.5 inches into the bumpstops. Now, does that damage the EDC?

^^ Yes, but there is a difference between also riding on the bump stops and once in a blue moon. I have had my car for 3 months now and only once have i had 4 ppl in it. Either way, im open to anything. Only problem is I have heard one person having a malfunction with neibach and one with H&R. This have absolytely nothing to do with the springs but reality is once u bring it in they dont care. Dealer will deff blame the springs. Now with the H&R drop its a differnt story. Becasue altho u may not get any errors, u are deff hurting the shocks.

These cars are designed to work with loads... 882 lbs max to be exact... they are tested around the Nürburgring with tons of equipment in the trunk. Whether it be one person or four persons, the car is designed to work under these permissible loads... and hence riding on bumpstops (you will be on them with just two 160lb persons). So just because you don't have friends doesn't mean that the M3 is not designed to be driven with friends... j/k

You are right that the dealer will play the "you've got aftermarket spings" card, and that's a risk you have to take as I said before.

HAHAHA good one. I guess so. Fuk it, i think im just gonna o with the eibach and call it a day. Plus technic on this forum just sent over a pm with a link to them and the price is just too good to refuse. I guess its time to take the risk just like everyone else. If at any point something should go wrong I would just switch right over to the KW v3, wouldnty even give the dealer a chance lol.

I have the Dinan's installed on my car. The drop is modest, but that is also what I was looking for. I will post some pics when I get a chance, but I am very happy with the results.

Yes we all have been waiting for this. PLease post pics. I myself am looking for a modest drop as well, but afraid that .5" is just too modest therefore went with eibachs. But please post some pics.

I had them installed at Laurel BMW in Westmont. They are a Dinan dealer. The labor was way overpriced, since Dinan deems this a 8.9 hour job. Labor rate is $120/hr. I replaced my own springs on my Porsche 996 in less than 5 hours, so you really get hosed on the labor.

Thanks, but please don't tell me that Laurel actually charged you the full 8.9 hours of labor at $120/hr that would be robbery! I too have done a bunch of suspension work on vehicles and can't imagine that much time!
