Automatic Car Wash

Why is the manufacturer's manual (Car Care) recommends it's preferable a cloth car wash over a touchless?

I would've thought touchless is safer...

Is it because of the chemichals?

I haven't taken mine to the car wash yet (DIY so far) but I will have to take it eventually.

Advice appreciated. Thanks!

Automated car wash facilities reclaim their water runoff and reuse it. I think that's the biggest reason to avoid them.

A lot of the advice found in owners manuals is odd. Some manufacturers still recommend the use of chamois for drying as an example.

Ultimately nothing beats a good hand wash. But if I had to choose between a touchless or soft cloth car wash, I'd take the touchless. It's good enough for an occasional wash during the winter.

i agree, theres nothing wrong with using the touchless in the winter. i would never use a cloth car wash because it could scratch the clearcoat. a touchless wash usually does use stronger chemicals that can strip off your wax so just dont use them too often. a hand wash with the mild soaps is always your best bet.

I plan on hand washing my car once a month and get it washed with a touchless twice a month. And somewhat off topic, but I also plan on getting my 330i detailed every 6 months. That's my cleaning plan.
