Front Plates - Needed or Not???

Anyone know what the real deal is with front plates? The dealer in Austin asked if I wanted it put on - did not know it was optional. I'll leave it off for now, but the Lakeway area is not too forgiving about things...

I received a ticket in my last car for no front plate, but I am still not running one now. The ticket is under 100 bucks and I am told by my insurance agent would have no effect on my insurance. My only real worry is it would give probable cause to get pulled over if I'd been drinking. I had my last ticket dismissed by the prosecutor and we were talking and he mentioned that some HPD cops will actually pull people over for no other reason.

Required, but many don't run it. The cops around where I live WILL stop you for no front plate. It gives them a reason to stop you and look for other things.

i have never been bothered for front plate. most cops in dallas don't give a shit unless your robbing a bank, murdering someone, or selling bricks of cocaine out of your trunk. dallas suburbs are different. i see you live in lakeway though, those are some brutal cops out there!

APD or DPS? We've been lucky, three cars w/o front plates, two stops but no tickets. APD doesn't seem to care much, but DPS does.

I was given the same option by the Austin dealer. I opted for no plate. I have heard only 1 plate (in the rear) is required for vehicles registered after September 1, 2007. I found this online:

80R7932 ACP-D

By: Brown of Brazos H.B. No. 1666

A BILL TO BE ENTITLED

AN ACT
relating to the number of license plates to be issued for and
displayed on a motor vehicle.
BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS:
SECTION 1. Subchapter A, Chapter 502, Transportation Code,
is amended by adding Section 502.010 to read as follows:
Sec. 502.010. ISSUANCE AND DISPLAY OF LICENSE PLATE. (a)
Notwithstanding anything in this code to the contrary, including
Section 502.180, the department shall issue only one license plate
for attachment at the rear of the vehicle for which the plate is
issued.
(b) Notwithstanding anything in this code to the contrary,
including Section 502.404(a), a person is entitled to operate on a
public highway a vehicle that displays only one license plate if the
plate is attached at the rear of the vehicle. A person may operate
on a public highway a vehicle that displays two license plates if
both plates were assigned by the department for the registration
period as a set of plates.
(c) In any provision of this code that relates to the
issuance or display of "license plates," "plates," or a "set of
plates," the term means only one license plate.
SECTION 2. The change in law made by this Act regarding the
issuance of license plates by the Texas Department of
Transportation applies only to the issuance of license plates by
the department for a registration period beginning on or after the
effective date of this Act. For a registration period that begins
before the effective date of this Act, the department shall issue
license plates as required by the law in effect immediately before
the effective date of this Act, and the former law is continued in
effect for that purpose.
SECTION 3. This Act takes effect September 1, 2007.

This was taken from what appears to be an official Texas Legislature website:

HB 1666 which you are referring to was sent to the House Transportation committee on 2/26/07. It has not been passed. That was the last update on the bill. Status is shown as "in committee" but I wouldn't hold my breath that it will get out of committee. We will see when the legislative session opens next year.

Good to know...so I guess this means that we do need both plates. But why would the dealer offer to leave the front plate off? I was stopped a few months ago for an illegal right turn and the officer in San Antonio did not mention anything about my absence of a front plate. I guess I'll leave it off until I am told otherwise.

I live in the Mansfield area and neither my wife nor I run a front plate. Neither of us has had any trouble.

I think most dealers will leave the hardware in the trunk for you to do it if you want it put it on.

Most police officers will not look at the front of the car during a stop, however not having it can give them a reason to stop you. I had that happen to me once. Where I live now they care more about no front places and really use it as a reason to stop you. I prefer no plate, but don't want to go thru the hassle of being stopped every so often.
