A disgusting topic but I have it, and apparently it’s very common.

I live in a high rise townhome so rarely see them anymore but today I spotted a dead one in the parking garage and actually had to walk on the other side of the lot in case it sprang to life ...and don't get me started on the flying ones, that's an immediate area EVAC event for me.

I can handle spiders, mice, snakes, lizards, moths, wasps, hornets, even bats, but when I see one of these “flat bugs” as we called them growing up in East Texas. I jump up on the first chair close to me and scream like a little girl.

Came here to say this, they also call them palmetto bugs in SC. If you call them cockroaches people get all offended. LOL

Yeah I get them where I'm at. Woke up probably 2 months ago to find one crawling on the bedroom wall - for the record our home is fricking spotless, the wife is OCD as shit and runs a tight ship haha. Well I quickly and quietly killed said bug without waking up the better half. I decided it would be better not to let her know as she probably would lose her shit.

They are in every single house down here. It doesnt matter if it is new or old, super clean or dirty, or even if you have an exterminator come daily... they are in the house. If anyone lives in the south and says they have never seen one in their house, they are lying.

I was in a bayside restaurant in Florida once and the railing by the water was crawling with cockroaches. I got up to walk out when the waiter stopped me and asked if anything was the matter. I said "the railing is covered with roaches". He politely smiled and said "those aren't roaches sir, they're water bugs"

When I was living in an apartment here about a year ago, one fell from the ceiling on my face while I was sleeping. Imagine the terror and flailing around to see it fly in the air and into the covers, only disappear for the rest of the night. Still have nightmares to this day.

Nothing seems to kill them either...., well..., Brake Kleen does a really good job.

a buddy of mine claimed to have collected one in a coke can one afternoon. I'll let you imagine his method of discovery.

OOOOOHHHH you ain't kidding. First month living in Florida and I'm like "Nope, pack up. We are going back to potholes and mobsters in NJ"

Hate these F'ers but we have pest control 4 times a year which erradicates 95% of them. I might see 2-3 a year now

You can also try Denver. I understand roaches don't like living much above 5,000 feet altitude. A friend of mine's wife is from Denver and didn't see one until she moved to Texas.

I feel there's a "somewhat" irrational fear of leaving any kind of beverage with an open top out of sight for more than 5 minutes. No joke, there was a gecko in my beer once, arguably hilarious but not if it was something else!

A cockroach species commonly called a "palmetto bug" is the American cockroach (Periplaneta americana). Adult American cockroaches are large and winged. Their coloration is dark brown with a cream-colored prothorax that has dark markings that resemble sunglasses. American cockroaches prefer damp conditions and often are found in sewers, woodpiles and mulch. They will fly to lights. This particular behavior is disconcerting for homeowners who encounter a large roach that flies near their face when entering doors with lights nearby in the evening.

And I don't recall ever seeing these growing up. It's been in the last 5-10 years that I recall seeing them. First time I did I was filling up with fuel and one fell from the awning and landed on the ground about 10 feet from me. Car wasn't filled up but it was. I was fuckin' outta there!

I’ve been told they will travel in cardboard boxes, so to be extra careful bringing in boxes, especially from places with food (Amazon, Costco, Sams, grocery, liquor). Same is probably true of paper bags from stores.

We put all powders/mixes into Tupperware or glass containers with tight lids, and don’t leave any food, liquid or sugars out. Salt is fine, most bugs don’t like it (ants won’t cross a salt line).

Our house is sprayed every 90 days in and out. We spot treat as needed in between. I’ve only seen two roaches, both small and dead, here (FL east coast) in the last year.

We also get wee little lizards in the house, which is odd. Trying to find out how they get in but they are so small they could come in through the weep holes in our sliding door tracks, which obviously we won’t plug.

If you think the palmettos are big in FL, you should see the grasshoppers we had this summer. I had one hold my car up while I changed a tire!

Same in my house with spiders. If she sees one a year the house is "full of them". I have every contraption know to man in the house to keep them away.

My guy told me bc everyone was home for the 14 day and 2 year quarantine roaches have been in abundance.
Shipping supplies home, Christmas shopping online, buying things as to not go in public etc etc.
