BMW X5 45e review

Interesting review of the 45e. According to the reviewers, it's not worth it over the regular 40i.

These reviewers are Canadian, so I can see where not having the $7500 rebate may put a dent in their enthusiasm. Also their main complaint seems to be that you have to plug in the car, which seems strange to me. It takes a few moments to plug in your car in your garage, but they act like this is some kind of herculean effort. Anyhow, just seems like they prefer normal drivetrains, which is totally fair.

I would also say it is a rather crappy review. Not informative at all, or really objective in their evaluation. Agree that they seem to feel like it is a bother to plug the thing in.

What she is talking about? My fuel tank 70l full since it filled at dealership March 25 2021 during delivery. I driven both i40 and 45e and in my opinion 45e far far ahead not only i40 but and Mercedes and Audi.

I have also noticed that on ICE only without any electric range left, I tend to get higher mpg on the highway than I did in my 40i, even though the 45e ICE is rated lower. I do a 160 mile round trip commute a couple times a week, so my electric range goes away pretty quickly. My mpg and acceleration continue to be better than my 40i was, even when I am out of electric juice.

Very useless review. Buy an etron or buy a Cayenne etc. thrown in there as well. Very shallow….

I don't deplete the hybrid battery on the regular, but is the higher mpg you're seeing factoring in MPGe? that would explain a higher value. I'm not familiar if the 45e can exclusively factor gasoline mpg.

For the cumulative mpg, I don't think it will give ICE only mpg, but I am looking at the instantaneous mpg on the dash (which changes quickly I'll admit). On my long commutes, I will go for 30+ miles with only dashes showing for the e-range. Since I did the same commute for the past year with my 40i, it is pretty good comparison of the mileage. When I use the cruise at the same speeds (70-75mph) the average mpg is reading 2-3mpg better (around 28-30 on flat roads vs 26-27 in the 40i). I am not sure if the battery has any hidden capacity to continue to help or not. By the time I get home and go through the neighborhood, the e-range goes up to 1mile briefly. But even with dashes showing, I can pop it into sport mode and accelerate without any notable difference

I've found most of their reviews to lack objectivity, even if mildly (and I mean *mildly*) entertaining. (Personally, the coffee/dorky banter annoys me.)

But, like any review, it can highlight aspects of a car that a potential buyer would want to know.

It isn't a non-negotiable declaration about the car.

Their credibility goes out the window when they compare the X5 PHEV to a full electric car (i.e. etron or Tesla). Might as well compare a semi-truck to a Kia Soul.

Eventually statistics will come out and we will see what people prefer to buy. So far I see 45e is very popular in USA and Europe.

After watching a few of their premium SUV reviews, they're pretty much just Cayenne (anything Porsche) fanboys/girls.

I think for anyone who has a short commute to work or is running some quick errands around town, the availability of a short EV range and never having to tap into the gas reserve is a huge plus (and worth the 2 minutes to plug it in).

Those looking for substantive video reviews of the 45e should check out Harry's Garage on youtube. Harry did two extensive reviews, the first sort of a very thorough first-impressions and the second a similarly extensive long-term test recap. Excellent, warts-and-all, but overall extraordinarily positive.

I agree with you. But I think it is a perfect long commute vehicle as well. I still can't get over the fact that I average 40mpg on a 160 mile round trip with no charging mid way. And that is going 82mph on the highway with lots of kick downs to pass people

Totally agree with you: his second review in particular is really terrific, very thorough, balanced and hands-on. IMO it is the most helpful review of the 45e that I have been able to find on YouTube and it has played a role in my decision to pull the trigger and buy one.

I've made my final decision to buy one after Harry's second review.

it's extremely satisfying having bought my 45e last year without these reviews (only specification articles and comparisons to the older 40e) then seeing reviews like the ones from Harry which affirm I made a very good purchase.

After less than a year with my 45e time for it to go

Sadly, i loved my 45e. But after 3 major issues with the batteries, drivetrain, and safety system, I'm going to get rid of it. Not sure what I'll get but not another BMW SUV. Maybe a lemon but I don't have time to deal with that process.

Battery recall, seatbelt failure, transmission malfunctioning

First was the battery recall where I couldn't charge the car and it took 7 months after I bought it to get the recall repair completed. I had the car for 5 of those months. Then the seatbelt failure occurred where I had to again safely bring the car directly to BMW. And today, first got a failure that said there is a transmission malfunction and was safe to drive but have it serviced. I drove it for 50 feet and a red light warning came on saying that there was another transmission malfunction and i should stop and call roadside assistance. Roadside assistance told me they couldn't tow it until Monday. Fortunately, we were very close to home and parked it on the street.
This is my 3rd BMW but it may be my last. I'm definitely getting rid of this one and buying something else. Just not sure what.

Therein lies the issue as the 45e ticks a lot of boxes other manufacturers haven't thought of especially the very large battery. MB in the way but stupidly put in a 4pot engine which just removes entirely from the driving experience

Sorry to hear you've had so many issues but get why you'd walk, I would have done the same and having read of so many issues and the reliability ratings on this model particularly am wondering if I dodged a bullet by not taking mine

For me it's totally worth it. I'm in Shanghai, China. A regular gas powered car requires a blue license plate which cost almost 50.000 usd.
The 45e has a big enough battery to qualify for green plate which currently is 250 usd.
So imagine to cost savings ordering the 45e. Yes the 45e is more expensive than 40i but less when you include the license plate. Just got my charge pile installed. Hope I'll get the car within 2 weeks.

What reliability issues have you heard of? The battery recall was a Samsung issue and impacted ev/PHEV models from almost every manufacturer I ask bc I have a deposit down and if there is some pile of problems I don't know about is like to learn more.
