X5 is #2. #1 might be surprising and a couple of other surprises.

Thanks for sharing: surprising that in the X5 lineup they do not even mention the extremely capable, class-leading 45e.

As to their #1... oh boy, it may be as good a car as you want, but I would never drive one just for the looks (or lack thereof): man, it reminds me of a Soviet-era Lada Niva... ugh!

PS: sorry if someone here is a fan... of either car!

Somehow the Defender looks so much better in person than in photos. I ordered one in September and finally got it in February. Most important, it drives great, so much better on-road than our LR4. I did add the torque vectoring option which also improves handling. Interior is a beautiful combination of rugged and luxurious materials. New Pivi Pro infotainment is fast and easy to use. Makes our beloved LR4 feel outdated.

Now my wife is trying to decide if she wants a Defender or X5 to replace the LR4. All Defender options are still available to order but delivery time is 4-5 months since it has become so popular. Will probably order a 2022 X5 with 1-month delivery as long as the HK and other options are back for 2022.

1-month delivery is not a hard and fast occurrence!

Odd mix of cars, and seems strange they didn't include any Audi's. I'm not really sure people looking for X5's would cross shop some of these.

I noticed this as well but apparently MT doesn't consider Audi having any direct competitors to the X5 in their lineup. The Q5 is considered a compact luxury SUV (in which it ranks 7th on their list), the Q7 is considered a luxury 3 row SUV (ranked 3rd) and the Q8 is in an entirely separate list called "luxury midsize fastback SUV's" (ranked 2nd).

Not a problem. Any order to delivery timeframe less than 4-5 months still beats waiting for another Defender.

I love the Defender and I think its cool to see it up at the top. Its really unique and a fantastic new design. I thought about it over the X5, but I really wanted the PHEV for daily driving.

The other thing I'll say, which may sound goofy because my wife and I drive a BMW and a Tesla (and soon to be an x45e instead of the Tesla), is that I feel that the LR name is just too pretentious for my neighborhood. My wife and I really like living in a normal, marginally upper-middle class neighborhood, and I think driving a LR reveals a bit too much about your income bracket.

Also, LR feels super niche to me -- its hard enough to get BMW parts sometimes, let alone Tesla! I can't imagine what it would be like getting replacement parts for a Defender.

What does this statement mean? Don't they all cost about the same? or is LR just associated with being even more expensive than BMW in general?

as an aside, I've never really thought of land rover being any better or worse than any other SUV (that you don't take off roading) for daily user. Coupled with all the horror stories I heard about their reliability, I never thought much of the brand. But since so many here were raving about it, i went to their website to see what new tech the Defender has. They have a 3:35s video touting the tech. The video stops every few seconds. For no reason (there's plenty of buffer). Anyway I think I'll just continue to stay away from LR.

thereef510 I mean that the perception by everyday people of LR/RR is that they are higher-end than your typical MB/BMW/Audi/etc. This could just entirely be my own perception, though, and I'm projecting. For example, the "Range Rover" model starts at 92k MSRP, which is ~30k more than the X5, GLE, etc.

Perhaps in Chicago it's like that. Down here in the deep fried South, anyone who's driving something that isnt American, Japanese or Korean is 'high end'

That’s funny, I grew up in Chicago and I didn’t realize that pickup trucks were used by anyone other than contractors until I moved to the St. Louis area!

Hah! I grew up in Phoenix and in high school it was a status symbol to drive a truck. I was friends with a girl who was 5ft tall and drove a Dodge truck that had two wheels in the back on either side (I don't know what this is called, sorry, not a truck person). Great commuter vehicle, and also a great vehicle for a new driver to learn on . Not like anything bad could come of a vehicle of that size being piloted by somebody inexperienced

It's interesting to see how "car experts" rank similar cars. They must value things differently.

Imo Range Rover is more comparable to GLS/X6/7/Q8/Escalade/Navi/LX.

I agree. In person it has great presence. Nothing like the tiny Lada!

The problem now is that especially in the South, everyone has a 'big' vehicle, whether it be a truck, or crossover. you barely see any sedans, nevermind luxury sedans.

Someone at Audi didn't pay enough ad money last year so they omit from their rankings???

My Defender build was $80K since I went with the X-Dynamic model and all of the offroad capability features. You can easily keep your Defender build under $70K which is on par with an X5.

And after the Tiger Woods accident in that GV80 we now know it's a pretty safe vehicle too. The vehicle was destroyed with engine ripped out and he lived. I guess Genesis got their money's worth sponsoring that golf tournament and giving him that GV80 to use.
