Downpipes and a Tune... How bad is the smell?

I really want to go for these mods but with 2 young kids I dont want them smelling fumes all the time.

Can someone please give me their first hand experience on how bad it is?

Windows up, no smell at all. Windows down and driving, no smell at all. Windows down at a red light, decent amount of smell. Loading the trunk is probably the worst if you're back there for a while

For me it was. Im sure you can get a Remus exhaust for sound and it might even sound better. I wanted it for sound and power so I went the downpipe route.

Very subjective. I’ve had both and prefer 100 cell cats for the added flow but reduced stink in the garage.

I have and could live with no cats. Just prefer 100 cells now.

Find a buddy with down pipes and see if it bothers you.

Only if the car is running. It isn't the worst but it is very subjective. I had a C63 with Long Tube Headers fully catless for years so I'm used to it.

it depends on the person, some don't mind it, others hate it. If your budget allows it, i recommend the catted option. No smell and a more refined sound with a deeper tone.

How much is it for the catted option? It was my understanding one has to go catless for the big power gains with a tune.

It smells, that's the bottom line. I had it on my M6 but not doing primaries on the M5, secondaries only.

I did primary castless and kept secondaries stock. I wanted the extra power with stage 2 and avoided the smell from castless secondaries.

Which did you do and with the secondaries did u still hear a good amount of turbo spool? Im on the fence about which to do. Also without tune do the minicat spacers work to mitigate the CEL?

I went with Bootmod3, stage 2 clears the check engine light from removing the cel. I'm on stock secondaries and yes definitely still get plenty of turbo spool and burbles with the catless primaries.

Great thanks for that! Which DP's did u pick up?

Ive run Bootmod on my F82 but now with the updated system at BMW I've heard a few people getting flagged so have been cautious with that otherwise I would just transfer my license.

I would keep the cats. The gains are VERY minimal with downpipes. The smell is bad, especially if the wind goes the wrong way and the windows are down. To me its not worth it to have any time your car annoys you or pisses you off by choking you with exhaust.

Smell is noticeable even with windows up when the car is parked with the engine on. But it is fast as a rocketship. Unreal!!!
