engine angle (hypothesis)
so the n54 is slanted at 30° and from what I understand it's just for center of gravity and a lower headline. from working on the car the 30° angle makes it a PITA to do any work especially in the exhaust side. would there be any downsides to turning the engine vertical? I know you would need custom mounts, bell housing, hood, etc. Doing this though would improve oiling from my understanding with the benefits of easier to work on. the downside would higher center of gravity and cost. Personally if the n54 was vertical from factory a lot of the headache would be solved.

I can't imagine it is worth the hassle. You should not be working on the car enough to ever make moving the engine vertical to make sense.
But do it and document it.

Oiling would certainly not be better, the oil pan is slanted to compensate for the angle, I would assume you would need a custom pan or at least a modified pickup tube.

Can't forget about the trans assembly specifically for 6MT, tilting the engine would result in needing a new hole in your trans tunnel as well as an extremely awkward shifting angle. I agree with Tyc0 on the oiling, you would likely be starving the engine of oil because of how the pickup tube works. You would need a lot of custom work done and would likely have larger issues further down the road. I'm sure the engine was engineered to be on that slant, and it's on that slant for a reason.
I say go for it and keep us updated. |

I would say leave it as is and use the money you will save to buy a nice E9x 6mt N52 that you could take off some sweet jumps.
