Powersteering reservoir cap always wet?

I've noticed on my 07' 335i that even if I clean it off really well, after a few days of driving there powersteering fluid cap starts to get wet around the outside. Eventually, if I don't wipe it off again, the whole cap will get covered in fluid residue and dirt and grime.

Is there a seal that's bad? Or does the plastic cap or reservoir warp over time? It's not a huge issue...I'm just getting tired of cleaning the stupid thing off all the time.

It’s overfilled. I don’t get this even on my track E90 335i where the steering endure a lot of hard work. I check level only with engine running and when power steering fluid is hot.

I had the same issue on my 330i and would constantly have the level become too low by spilling its guts out over time. Turns out the breather hole that the cap had a bunch of gunk in it. My laws of fluid dynamics as the fluid became hotter it would siphon itself up thru the hold and spill out.

I took a pipe cleaner and ran it up and down from the bottom then in and out and cleaned out with brake cleaner as well. Ever since it was cleaned the "sweating" has stopped and will actually keep the level correct.

It's showing the right level when it's hot.....it's not overfilled.

Thanks, I will check out the breather hole in the cap.

Get a new o-ring for the cap, they all weep after 10 years, usually the oring will take care of it.

I don’t know. Mine will be 13 years in April 2021 and been through a lot more heat cycle than a ordinary car and don’t have this particular problem. On 4th coolant pump but that’s whole another issue these cars have.....At the track have have seen almost brand new BMW what seep power steering. Some guys use tennis swearband on it. Some have catch cans on it. In my experience it has usually been due to tank being overfilled.

Replace with the 1M reservoir or add a relief hose on the cap

Fcpeuro a new seal and a new cap while you're at

It's like $15 or so

Pick up some other parts while you're at it to get free shipping, lifetime warranty on everything anyways

Mine was 13 years old a month ago, replaced the seal in the summer and no more leaks!
