First real post on here so forgive any issues. I recently just finished a long string of mods on my e90 N54 6MT. Never had any ticking noises before until recently about a week or two after I finished. The car doesn't get driven a lot but when it does it's driven for long lengths. It's been pretty cold here lately since it started happening (20-40's F). I'd like to rule out lifter tick? The ticking will come on strong and speed up with RPM and then eventually shut off completely, then back on and so on. I also have an E83 N52 x3, which does get lifter tick and I can say that they don't sound or act alike. Injectors sound normal. Any thoughts? Video attached

Not sure what it could be but your video requires permission to view, change that and then we can give it a listen

That sounds like your fuel tank vent valve (part #13907618652). It's pretty common and harmless for them to tick like that. Mine sounds just like that from time to time. It's somewhere on the driver's side of the engine.

It does sound like drivers side and that explains the on/off pattern but I'm not sure it's ticking speed would raise with rpm like it does.

Could be HPFP as well. Hard to say with these motors but they just tick. Probably harmless.

(As much as I don't want to) I'm also thinking hpfp/vac pump area. Pulling it into the shop tonight to do some tear down and get a better look. I've been told my multiple people it's harmless or catastrophic so only one way to find out lol.

Get MHD and do some Data logs. That will tell you what kind of condition the HPFP is in.

I'm still in the process of a wedge custom tune from Ken, datalogs have looked great and car runs even better. HPFP seems strong and has a PR 2.5 on the low side supplying it (Walboro 535). Only thing is just an annoying ticking...

Listened to the video and I hear the tick, maybe some sort or bearing in the pulley assembly ? My ac condenser makes a noise like this from time to time.

Many ticking sounds on an engine can sound the same.
Could be many things like hydraulic lifter noise, WG, HPFP etc. But have seen videos of similar noise caused by one of the injectors. Try unplugging one by one to see if ticking goes away. Cant hurt trying.

Get a stethoscope, easiest way to pin point where the noise is coming from
