Best bike rack on X5 w/ trailer hitch

I'm gonna pick up a new bike rack for my new X5. I have the trailer hitch. Any suggestions on one that will allow me to still open the trunk while the bike is mounted?

Also, is the hitch receiver 1.25" or 2"?

The OEM USA hitch has a 2" receiver.

I'd be surprised if you find a bike rack that allows both the rear hatches to open with a bike(s) on it. Maybe one that tilts.

The 1Up tilts so does the Kuat. Both premium racks. 1 up is lighter and easier to use and takes minimum space to store.

I've got a Yakima Fullswing. It swings totally to the side so you can open everything.

Thule or Yakima are the standard options. My preference is Thule but they are basically 6 vs. ½ dozen. Same goes for the roof mounted cargo boxes, etc.

New iteration of 1UP Equip D seems nicely built. Good reviews. Will order one. Hopefully it'll work well with Stealth hitch (departure angle, parking sensors etc.).

I went with the 1 up 2" superduty and an add on. It's a great rack. So easy to use and super light on and off. Folds up and stores away. Gives me the option of single when I am riding solo and double when I ride with someone else.

Where did everyone by their 1 Up's? Straight from manufacturer or are they sold somewhere else?

1UP direct. I don't think they work through a dealer network .

Had a Thule and sent it back, too heavy and stuck out too far. We got a Yakima Hold Up and have been very happy with this rack for two years now. Would def. recommend the Yakima.

Kuat racks are the closest design match to luxury cars. These racks are well designed and made.

I have a bmw installed hitch. My Yakima bike, which I used previously with another car/hitch, does not install into the hitch. It fits in the hitch just fine but the holes do not line up for installing the pin to secure the bike rack. Only half of the hole is exposed when the bike rack is fully inserted into the hitch. It is as if the hole in either the hitch or bike rack was drilled slightly off.

Feel inside of the receiver and make sure that there's not a nub of welding sludge that's preventing the rack's tongue to slide in as far as it should. If there is, maybe a small grinding wheel on something like a Dremel tool would make it all fit.

If there is, it would seem to be a warranty issue for the vehicle, and or maybe the rack itself.

I'm using this one with an e-bike and it's very solid. I only needed a single, but it can expand to carry two bikes. Light weight and compact. It swings down to allow opening the hatch

I second the KUAT recommendation. They're very well made and hold the bikes securely. I've got a Sherpa 2.0.

They go on easy with no tools and have a knob operated wedge to tighten them up and keep them from rattling in the receiver. Foot operated lever to tilt it out so you can open the hatch.

I just bought one of these as well. Haven't put it together yet but I decided to go with this after reading some reviews.

Ditto on the Kuat racks. Here is my Sherpa 2.0. It's so easy to lower it and then have the back of the X5 fully open. I also got a mount on Amazon from 1UP to mount the rack on the garage wall when not in use. 1UP USA Rack Stash

Another vote for the Kuat. We have the NV 2.0 and it's a champ for securing the bikes and is well made. All of the edges are smooth and rounded and materials are high quality. The built in bike stand is great for servicing. Also the ability to add additional bikes to the standard 2 is convenient (easy to install). I'm adding a brake light kit to the rack when it is folded down. The NV makes this more difficult, the Sherpa would be easier given the length of the solid horizontal bars

BTW, digging the wall mount above, now hunting...

This is what we use to store our Kuat rack.
