New brake pads clicking
Hi all,
I have recently installed new brake pads all round on my 420 which has the blue Msport calipers. The brake feel is absolutely fine, but, if i stop, put it in reverse, move then brake you can hear the pads click as if they have shifted slightly. If you then go into drive and brake again it does the same thing. It feels like they are slightly too small for the caliper, or the retention plate isnt holding them hard enough. Has anyone had this? |

I have the same on my 340i (non blue calipers)
I've read that it's a TADTS (They All Do That Sir) and not to worry.

Is it genuine or aftermarket pads you've got in there? I find that pads for the AP calipers on my Impreza vary quite dramatically in size, certainly enough to cause either an interference fit (in which case I just grind a bit off each side) or they flop around and cause constant clacking in use. The caliper design on the Sport callipers is very similar so I imagine it'll be the same issue.

I also have the blue calipers. Mine do this as well. Going to try swapping the caliper hardware out and see if it helps.

What pads do have ?
It's very common and nothing to worry about. Just a bit of pad movement, and better to have that than pads which are too tight and overheat.

Completely normal on these type of calipers where the pads drop in compared to traditional calipers.
A friends Impreza would do the same etc. Nothing to worry about at all.

Happens to mine as well and thats with standard BMW pad in blue calipers.
Also did it in my previous car with Pagid pads in same calipers. Interesting that in my Impreza with the 4 pot Brembos never seemed to have that issue. Perhaps it was there but youjust couldn't hear it over the sound of the exhaust... |

It might be nothing, but I have been checking replacement pads for my 330d that was retro fitted with the BMW power kit and front Brembo brake calipers with 340mm discs. I have never had any clicking or brake squeal from the brakes.
There appears to be two different part numbers for the brake pads and when you check the pad sizes, they are slightly different. BMW quote 34116878876 for the pads to suit the power kit with 340mm discs, but there is also 34116878882 which appears to be for the standard 340mm plain disc. When you check these part numbers against sizes, there are small differences and as an example, Brembo list them as two separate part numbers: P06088 and P06096. So, there appears to be a size difference in the pads that could explain why some click / squeal. |

There is a standard BMW fix for squealy brakes which involves putting a light chamfer on the leading edge of the pad. Had it done on my F33 and it stopped the squeal. Perhaps it might also help with the clicking.

you need to cake the appropriate places of the caliper in a relevant grease as described in the technical manuals, which basically says, whereever the pad is touching caliper.
I'm running Brembos P06 096 front and rear, swapped recently. 370mm msport brakes. Zero noise. |

Really odd, but your reply has only literally just come through, wonder were its been for the last 21/22 days
Managed to get some off eBay, problem i was having is, I'd find the part number for my F36, but when i would look on somewhere like Demon Tweeks they would say they are not suitable for my car, its really not hard to confuse me as i'm rather a bit sh*t at ordering stuff as i'm not very mechanically minded, just hope they fit when i get round to do doing them !! I have the same problem at the moment, i'm looking at stuff to help the rubbish steering feel, so looking at a front strut brace, but all the ones mentioned seem to come from the states, and there are hinged ones and un hinged ones. Also looking at some Super pro bushes for the lower control arms but i'm not sure exactly what i need !! Now i know what it feels like when your trying to get a parent or elderly relative to set up the internet on there phone or get them to join a zoom call. The joys of getting older !! |
