Oil change record refused
Hi all
I had my oil changed annual despite the car telling me it's not yet due. The dealer said he couldn't add the change on the cars record as it would mess up the schedule. Is that true or BS? Thx

My bmw dealer adds anything they do to the car's record. Including extra oil changes, as our cars are condition based service, not interval based service to my knowledge.

BS!
Why is it that BMW doesn't screen out idiots before allowing them to sell their cars? The oil change interval isn't mileage based, it's mileage and time. For my car in the US the interval is 10,000 miles or one year, whichever comes first. I don't drive much, so doing a yearly change it's around 4,000 miles, even though when I change it the schedule says I still have 6,000 miles to go. Your interval depends on the model of car and country. |

If the dealer performed the service, then they should definitely update your record and reset the car’s service interval. As Billfitz said, there’s a mileage and minimum time component.
But OP wasn’t clear on exactly who performed the service. If he did the oil change himself, or an indy did and didn’t reset the service interval at the time, then I wouldn’t be surprised to hear a dealer is unwilling/unable to retroactively add the record. From the dealer’s perspective, they didn’t do the service so they’re not going to be responsible for saying that a service was performed. In that type of situation you would keep your receipts for your own records if you plan on providing them to a future buyer. Also if you’re doing your own oil changes then you can buy a gizmo to reset the service indicator yourself. |

You can do a reset of the oil change interval yourself in iDrive. The only thing a dealer does differently is data logging, which you can do with the right tool.

Like Billfitz, I don’t put a lot of miles on my car.
When it was new, I had them change out the oil - at my expense - at 1800 miles. They didn’t reset it in the car because that would have thrown off the free maintenance schedule. But I did get a receipt showing the oil change was done. After that, I get the annual oil change at the 12 month interval, not the mileage interval. |

The I drove off the dealer lot when I bought the car ...mine say 10000 miles interval but it change right away and I got my first oil change at 6000 miles. I assumed it was base on condition because I drive 95% local street. Then after that it settled at 6500 miles... So dealer change mine at every 6500 to 7000 miles.
I assume resetting it in iDrive records it in iDrive. I could be wrong. I will not be going back to the dealer for a while because my free maintenance is out now. I'll be doing my own maintenance, the one I can do anyways. |

The reason why it settled at 6500 is because it learned from your driving habits that's how far you'd probably drive by the time 12 months went by. 'Condition Based' is related to time and driving habits. There's no teeny tiny Blackstone Lab hiding in iDrive, so the car has no way of knowing the actual condition of the oil. Like almost all of the condition based intervals it's not a precise calculation. it's more of an educated guess.

I wouldnt of said BS, i have seen that statment on our servicing service here in the uk.......
If your doing it completly out with the recommended invervils then i think its to be expected. Keep your copy of the service with the car, wont do it any harm. |
