I’m digging the front grill even though it has received hate. However, having a front plate IMHO ruins the look.

Nope, love my late 2019 F32 440i much more than this, and with only 12K on the clock I will be keeping it a long time, G22 just doesn't look like a BMW to me YET, no doubt it will grow on me but never enough to want to own it.

Without the number plate, some will complain the grill is too big

It seems Bmw owners are way too hung up on the front plate.

it'll definitely grow on you it just takes time, me personally if i was in the position to order one i would but i do think the 40k asking price is steep

Went to the dealer today for an oil change and got a chance to see a new G22. Conveniently, it was parked diagonally next to an F32 so I could see both of them from the side and 3/4 views. I was hoping seeing it in person would be better but honestly, the design did not work for me. Several prominent issues:
  • Grill - yes, it is big and ugly but it is also disproportionate to the headlights and intakes. The ratios are off, making the front look awkward. It really, really does not work.
  • Side view - the rear 1/4 panel rises up much higher than on the F32, diminishing the Hoffmeister kink and making the car look tall and kinda fat from the door back. The crease lines start and stop in a non-logical fashion and as a result the side looks visually confused.
  • Rear - the back view is actually pretty clean and as nice as the F32's.
  • Interior - it looks a little too video-game for me but is clean and updated looking. Not my preference but it's fine.
  • I did not get to drive it so no observations there.
Overall, I think it looks the same or worse than in pictures and that is not a good thing. Very Honda Accord Coupe-ish. Judge for yourself but I sure am glad I got one of the last F32s.

If I were in the market now, I'd be hard pressed to consider it (or the G20). Added negatives - no manual and no RWD in the M440.

Bonus review - Saw the 2-series GC for the first time and it too does not work. Strange proportions, a Bangle-butt hood, and all sorts of other visual problems. Think Acura ILX.

With my budget, the only current BMW I could afford that I'd consider is the M240. I did see a Tanzanite Blue M550 and it was gorgeous (and $90k). Oooof.

I admit I hated it when I first saw it and it's slowly growing on me. I saw a few in person and admittedly they do look better in person regarding the grill. The interior is a huge upgrade from the F series that's for sure. One other thing I don't like about the new 4 series is the lack of a well defined lines on the side and rear panel that flows through the door handles, the new one is smoother and doesn't have well defined lines which takes away from its appeal as well. If I could afford one and didn't just get a 2018 430i about 4 months ago, I'd probably get one though or a G20 3 series.

very interesting points there and a good review, as you said you were lucky that it was next to a f32 so you could see every change in the flesh, overall i think they've done a really good job with g22 model if i had the money i'd definitely bbe in the market for it. i have seen a few 2er gc's and i think they look nice the back is weird but in a good way it reminds me of the x4 and id rather have a 140i over the 240 i know you guys in the states dont get them which is a shame

I was just at the automall the other day, and saw a bunch of G22, I agree in person, it looks so much worse, honestly, I think even my non-M sport F32 looks way better than G22, because it still looks like a proper BMW. The G shouts mustang from the side, angry beaver from the front and infiniti from the back. The white G22 is a true contender for the ugliest new car in production.
