Rev the engine while you are listening to the ticking. If it speeds up with revs, it could either be the injectors or the lifters. I used to get ticking on my N54 from the lifters.
The official BMW procedure for N54 ticking noise (which has an associated TSB) is to let the car get up to temp, then hold the revs at around 2,000 RPM for 30 seconds. That forces enough oil into the heads to evacuate any air stuck in the lifters and resolve the ticking (if it caused by the lifters). I haven't heard an N55 with injectors that loud, but it is still a possibility. |

Weird I popped my bonnet to have a listen yesterday as could swear ticking sounds were louder inside the cabin than I ever recall.
This is after mods were fitted but don't see why they'd affect ticking. It reminds me of how some VW engines sound. All I had done was larger FMIC, MST turbo inlet, turbosmart DV, forge charge pipe. |

Sounds Normal this close to the engine. Is the car fully warmed up as well? Lifters are generally a bit louder when the engine is still cold

My lifters sound really loud after winter storage cold starts or if the car has been sitting for awhile, but once it is fully warmed up after a long drive it quiets down alot.

I can't speak to the N55, having not done enough research yet, but on the N54 it did not cause a code. Rather, the TSB prompted dealerships to perform the procedure based on customer complaints of the loud ticking noise. I don't think I have a video of it, but on the N54 it was pretty loud, especially on first startup if you let the car sit for a week or so.
