Silver box behind headlight

Hey everyone,

I’m new to this and not particularly good with cars. I went to change my dipped headlight on my F30 320d, thinking it was a straight bulb swap, however when I removed the cover there was a silver box and two power adapters (see photos). Can anyone advise what this is, and what the bulbs are likely to be?

What photos?

Do you have the lighting package with HID headlights? The silver box is probably the HID bulb base.

Yes, photos are there. That is the ballast for an aftermarket HID kit. Does your car have the factory reflector housings?

I attempted this without taking the wheel off so based off feel no, it didn’t feel like what I was expecting.

Sorry I know this isn’t much help, just trying to figure out whether it’s likely the bulb or a fuse that’s gone, and what type of bulbs these are.

That is an aftermarket HID bulb with an H7 base. If you are just trying to replace with a new halogen H7 bulb, then just unplug everything that is aftermarket from the factory plug and connect factory plug to your replacement H7.

And to try to answer your question about whether it's a bulb or a fuse. With that setup, it's either the bulb or a bad ballast. You could try plugging the bulb into the side that works and see if it lights up.
