Changing wheels/tires
Hi all,
I took delivery of an M2 and plan to change the summer wheels/tires for a winter set. For those who DIY change the wheels, do you all balance/align the wheels each time you make the change? I had a previous beater car that I changed the wheels at winter time but never bothered to do anything beyond taking the old wheels off and mounting the winter wheels on. Since this car is my new baby, I'm wondering if there is more I should do with each wheel swap. Thanks! |

You shouldn’t have to do anything but exchange the wheels.

If you're changing the entire wheel/tire set then the only thing you should have to do is reset the tire pressure monitors by driving a few miles. I have done this for years with all of my cars. So much better than the inconvenience of taking tires on and off, and all of the issues that comes with that.

I drive my M2 in the winter probably a few times a month. Winter here in Ontario kicks the crap out of my brakes. They drag, sound and feel rough, an have a shake when braking. The local dealership wants to machine the rotors, but I don’t think I want them to do that as it has only been a short term solution in the past.
At least the summer rims as a winter setup will probably hold up to salt and rocks. Good luck! |

Welcome! Where in DC are you?
As long as you get the new wheel/tire set professionally mounted and balanced before install (or during, if you have a pro do the first swap), you're good to just swap them out moving forward. I do the same thing - we don't get enough snow to warrant a set of actual snow tires (IMO), but I definitely don't want to be driving around on summers in sub-40 temps. Not that you asked, but I went with Pilot Alpins on 18" Apex EC-7s as my winter set. |

Thanks for all the replies! Very helpful.
I'm actually in Maryland, Rockville area. Winters here are on the mild side, but occasionally can get a few inches of snow a few times a season. I bought a set of 641m's with the Michelin PA4's which will come balanced and with TPMS installed. Nice to know from here on out it will just be simple swaps. |

And remember to mark the wheel locations as you remove them - so they go back on next year in the correct location.

What kind of wheels are you using? Aftermarket? If so make sure they're hub centric, if not I'd presume you need hub rings.

What color is your M2? I'm in a HS M2 Comp so you'll see me flying around. |

I have frequently seen an HS M2C around my area. Maybe it’s you! Not gonna lie, seeing that car inspired me to get back into a BMW. |

Hi DMV Contingent - Arlington here. Got my build order in last week for the M2 CS - can't wait for delivery (late this year or possibly even into 2021). Agonized color because I love the HS, but ultimately had to go with the launch Misano Blue. Will be looking into snow wheels/tires next year; plan to keep my E39 540i6 through this winter along with its snow wheels. Opted for steel brakes rather than CCB's available on the CS; one (relatively minor) consideration was ability to put 18" rims on as snow wheels. True we don't get a lot of snow here, but snow tires really perform and have always given me confidence through the dead of winter, over several BMW's back to the late '80's.
