The Unsung Hero - Through Loading System

Weird right. Of all the options that deserves a shout-out, I've picked this one. Let me explain why:

1. I opted for this option on my replacement M2C.
2. It provides an unexpected but crucial benefit...

(Images pinched from Google).

1. I previously had an OG M2 without this option. I gave a lift to some family members in the back who, without a cup holder, forgot to keep hold of their drink. The inevitable happened and it went everywhere. Lots of cleaning required. For those that don't know, the through-loading system provides 2x cup-holders in the back. Problems solved!

2. The added benefit! I was recently fitting the M performance steering wheel. As you may know, this requires disconnecting the battery. Unfortunately for our beloved M2s, if you were to disconnect the battery and then accidentally close the boot... whoops. You aren't getting into your car again. Thankfully I have never made this mistake but I have read of others who have. Well, I recently realised the Through Loading System allows you to pull the middle seat down from the FRONT. This allows you to regain access to the battery compartment in the event of a failed/disconnected battery.

IMO, this makes this option a "must have".

Can't you open the trunk with your physical key?

Nope 👎 there is no key hole for the trunk. Only the doors. If you close the trunk with the battery disconnected you're pretty much stuffed. There is a way to jump the car from the front and hope you get enough juice to open the trunk but yeah - it's an atrocious design oversight. This option can help (if you're looking at getting a new car that's is).

This is an option on the M2C? I've never seen a pass-through on an M2, and would love to have one.

Jeeze what an oversight from BMW. Guess I will be cautious next time when disconnecting my battery

Yes, well, in the UK it is. Maybe it isn't in other countries I'm not sure.

My M2C rental in Germany had this but unfortunately not an option in the US. Our seats fold but we don't have the pass-through/armrest.

Yeah really wanted it, but it wasn’t an option on US cars. Just makes the rear seat feel a lot more “finished” oh well. Corona times means I’m not putting anyone back there for the foreseeable future anyway...

Edit: For those interested, Porsche vehicles come with a really cool solution.

It's BMW option code 465 (40/20/40 rear seats).

Always had that option, also on my M2C. Especially my daughter likes it as armrest and uses the cupholders.

Regarding the battery - when it's disconnected you should always wrap the lock receiver with a towel or cloth to prevent the trunk from being able to be closed.

Not really an oversight since they made this change intentionally between model year 2008 and 2009 for multiple models (I'm know they did this for E82 and E92, not sure what other models).

IIRC, some really early build date 2009s (i.e. 12/2008 build date), still had the keyhole, but it was gone from everything built in 2009 (at least for E82).

Indeed. I have always done this. Think this 'option' should be standard however as a preventive measure. Or BMW could just add a keyhole!

So... not an oversight just intentional stupidity? Either way it's a daft design choice and the fact they haven't rectified it is strange. Maybe this feature was always supposed to be standard but some bean counter decided to make it optional and hence the problem we now face.

First time my wife and boys went in the M3 (replaced my M2) the only comment they had to make was the fact they were missing the cupholders in the rear seats! LOL

This is defintely a must have option, if only to keep family quiet!

40/20/40 rear seats are also unavailable on the M2 CS (unlike EURO-spec OG M2, M2 LCI and M2C).
