Smoothness/oscillations at highways speeds.

Does anyone have an issue with feeling slight oscillations through the steering wheel at highways speeds? Like a very distant oscillations. Not sure if this has to do with having the 22" rims.

I'd like to hear back from X7 drivers their experience in this matter.

I have a very very light vibration in the steering wheel at highway speeds if I don't drive the car for a week. It goes away after a few miles, so it's likely caused by flat spotting in the tires from being parked for so long.

I have a 2020 X7 40i with 21 inch wheels. It drives as smooth as silk.

Perhaps it's something with your tires. What tires do you have? Run Flats? I have Bridgestone All Season NON Run Flat tires. I hate Run Flat tires and will never put them on my vehicles unless things change drastically. Their expensive, noisy, and some shops refuse to repair them if they get punctured.

I'm old school though so your tastes and perceptions may vary.

It's a similar issue with X5 owners with 22", especially with Continentals, and road harmonics depending on the road condition.

Hmm, I have the 22" rims with continentals. It feels somewhat like it's going to be smooth but I can still somewhat feel a distant vibration through the seat and a tiny bit in the steering wheel.

My 22" continentals are smooth too, but only 600 miles on the rig and only ~100 of them on highway...

I would get the tires rebalanced first.

You could check to see if your X7 has the wishbone vibration absorber installed on the front suspension wishbone - see Part #13 in the diagram attached to Part #4 front wishbone.

Some X5s with 22" were missing this part.

You can check by looking underneath the vehicle at front left or front right.

I checked and mine has these. I drove it again this afternoon and at the same speeds on a different road it felt smooth. I'm thinking it has to do with the fact that I'm not used to driving low profile tires, and I've noticed it more in the morning on shorter drives which doesn't give the tire time to warm up.

It only has 550 miles so maybe it's still due to its break in period?

I have an appointment for Tuesday to have them recheck the road force balance, if after more driving this long weekend I still seem to feel it's an issue.

I have had issues since day one. They swapped tires, rotated, road force balance. All to tell me the technicians couldn’t find it. I drove another 40i and it had similar issues and vibrations between 55 and 80 mph. I drove an M50 as a loaner. No issues. Drove another 50i as a loaner. No issues. I am not certain if there is a correlation or not, but I have 10000 miles on the car today and it still vibrates. And the is a rattle in the lower tailgate that has been there from day one. I can manipulate the tailgate and it stops for a few days.

Same here. Taking it on Tuesday so the shop foreman can drive it. It has already been RoadForce balanced. Which helped a lot but I seem to still get a bit of slight vibration around 72+ mph. However, it seems to have gotten better once the tires have warmed up. But it's still Intermittently inconsistent.

Good luck. Mine has been in the shop almost 75 days since I have had it. Lots of weird issues. Latest is cool/heated cup holders don’t work.

I work directly with the service manager when I take mine in, and I had the same problems. He told me that BMW is aware of the vibration issues on the 22" rims. As of about 4 weeks ago, he said there was no resolution to the problem. This problem does not occur with the 21" wheels. I have 2020 with about 11k miles on it now.

So I've been driving my X7 around more this weekend. I'm almost at 700 miles since I bought it last month. The more I've driven it, that vibration has somewhat gone away. Before it could be felt at 62mph, then it got better and it could only be felt around 72mph. Now I can Get all the way up to 80+ mph and now vibration is hardly felt at all. Feels petty smooth overall with just a touch of vibration. I believe the tires have flat spots since it was a production 11/2019 and probably sat for too long which caused flat spots. Will be taking to the dealership to road test and check out the cause.

So to update. Vibration never went fully away. Was still present at higher highway speeds. Took it to the dealership and then found that the tires had flat spotted. They're taking care of it under warranty and will be replacing the tires with a full new set. Very glad of how they handled my concern. 😁
