X7 muffler corrosion

Is this normal? Car only has 2k+ miles and garage kept. Any thoughts? I’ve already made a service appointment to see what’s going on but this is ridiculous for a M50i.

it appears you have several abrasions which lead to rusting. spray matte black with high heat paint but it will return if you continue to scuff these parts.

Hmm. I don’t remember going over anything. Probably the salt during the winter time. It’s like almost everywhere within the whole exhaust system. I did do some research online and will probably coat it like you said with the HH paint. Thanks for the feedback.

I have about 10,000 miles over the last 8 months in PA, keep the car outside, and it does not look like this.

I thought that was the fuel tank, not the muffler.

In any case, that doesn't look right. I would contact the dealer.

I always thought this when I was a kid, wondered why it was always exposed and seemed to be a nice target to take out a vehicle with one shot. In reality, the fuel tank would be forward and above a bit, also plastic.

I don't see any good diagrams showing a great relative position, but here you could see it relative to the fuel filler door (granted they separated the filler pipe from the tank here):

Whereas this is the exhaust system:

Damn
When are they going to approve the electrical "J" type hitch 🤬.

They approved it on other brands.

**UPDATE**
BMW is going to cover the cost to replace all rusted components under the carriage. Thanks for all the advice from everyone.

awesome. Like ^person said above, scrapes took out the clear/top coating on those parts and the rust dug into the raw metal. Even if you didn't back over something, someone did at some point. Since they're handling it, I wouldn't really be -that- concerned because there doesn't appear to be any denting, so whatever it was, it was likely pretty trivial

Picture of 40i. Though I'm surprised to see the exposed wiring on the left rear. Not sure how that's going to hold up in Salt and snow of the northeast
